That makes the hunt for the SEC crown that much more meaningful. Here are our top picks to win the SEC Championship in 2012.

LSU Tigers Return to Championship

LSU knocked out eight ranked teams last season in one of the most memorable runs in the history of college football. Despite their achievements, the Tigers stumbled on both ends of the season. They dropped the season opener against Oregon 40-27 and, of course the BCS title game against Alabama. Don’t expect that to happen twice.

This year they start off with three straight home games including a season opener against the North Texas Green Machine (5-7, 7-5 ATS) that should leave them ready for Auburn on September 22. The Tigers will have to be very careful when they take on SEC newcomer Texas A&M (7-6, 4-9 ATS) at College Station. LSU has dropped four straight there and the unpredictable Aggies are nowhere near as bad as that win/loss record indicates.

The obvious red circle game on the LSU schedule comes on November 3rd when they host Alabama for a repeat of the BCS title game. The Tigers were humiliated 21-0 in that outing and will be thirsty for revenge. They’ve also got the advantage of a bye week ahead of the big day.

Look for LSU to have another impressive season that’s capped off with an SEC Championship.

Alabama Looking at Road Challenges

Last season Nick Saban coached the Crimson Tide (12-1, 8-1, 9-4 ATS) to their second BCS Championship in three years and there’s no reason to think they can’t contend again.

Alabama’s strength has always been their defense and they’ve got five starters returning to that vaunted line. Remember, in 2011 only one team, Georgia Southern, scored more than two touchdowns on Alabama. College football bettors might want to note that the under paid out seven times on Alabama games.

One thing that makes this season very different from last for the Tide is a much tougher road schedule. They face Michigan (11-2, 66-2, 7-4-1 ATS) at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. These two programs are used to playing big time games and have very mobile, national followings. Michigan is eager to prove that they’re back in the big time and should give Bama a very good game.

The Tide face Arkansas (11-2, 6-2, 8-5 ATS) and LSU (13-1, 9-1, 10-4 ATS) on the road later down the line. A win in Death Valley on November 3rd would all but assure Alabama another trip to the big game.

In a race that’s going to be insanely tight, the slightest edge is going to make a big difference. Alabama’s tough road trials could be the difference between another trip to the big game and a mere top five finish.

Other SEC Teams to Watch for in 2012

• Watch for Georgia (10-4, 7-2, 8-5-1 ATS) to make a serious run in the SEC. Bettors should note that the Bulldogs have what passes for a soft schedule in the conference and have plenty of returning starters.

• Texas A&M (7-6, 4-5, 4-9) is new to the SEC conference, but not the opponents. They’ve faced off against SEC opponents in plenty of bowl games and know what it takes to compete against them.

2012 SEC Conference Futures Best Bets

• 2012 SEC Conference Best Bet: LSU Tigers +220

Our pick to win the 2012 SEC Conference is the LSU Tigers at +220. It should be a battle between the two powerhouse teams in the SEC again this season, but we think LSU has retained more talent on their roster. Losing Trent Richardson is going to be a huge hurdle for the Bama offense to overcome in 2012. You can bet on college football futures this season on your Blackberry or one of the other popular mobile devices.
