My Predictions for This Year’s Preakness Stakes

I’ll Have Another shocked quite a few people by winning the 2012 Kentucky Derby. The value that I’ll Have Another had in the derby is now gone and you can currently bet on the horse at roughly +200 at most shops. I think I’ll Have Another will show in the Preakness Stakes this weekend, but I don’t think the horse will win.

The Kentucky Derby is a 10-furlong race while the Preakness Stakes is 9.5-furlongs. I’ll Have Another managed to barely catch Bodemeister in the derby and I don’t think I’ll Have Another will have enough room to catch the sprinters in this race. I think we’ll see Bodemeister jump out to a lead again and this time hang on for the victory. The problem with is that you can only bet on Bodemeister at about +137 right now, which is horrible for a race with such a talented field.

A neat statistic about the Preakness Stakes if you’re betting on the race this weekend is that only 3 horses have ever won the Preakness Stakes after not racing in the Kentucky Derby since 1984. Apart from Bodemeister and I’ll Have Another the other horses that raced in the Derby include Creative Cause, Went the Day Well, Daddy Nose Bet and Optimizer.

Went the Day Well finished in 4th in the Derby while Creative Cause finished in 5th place. If you wanted to bet on a horse with a bit of value either look enticing at the current odds. In my opinion I think Creative Cause is the better of the two horses and if you’re picking between these two horses I’d pick Creative Cause over Went the Day Well.

Daddy Nose Best took 10th place in the derby at the beginning of the month and Optimizer finished in 11th place. These two don’t appear like they’ll be contenders this weekend at the Preakness Stakes although Optimizer at +4000 pays a lot. The horses that didn’t race in the Kentucky Derby don’t have a chance this weekend. I don’t think any of them will surprise the two favourites.

My Pick – Bodemeister to Win, Creative Cause to Place and I’ll Have Another to Show
