2012 Olympic Basketball Betting Odds & Picks

The 2012 Summer Olympics are set to kick off, which means that it’s time to look at the Olympic Basketball betting odds, and also give a few picks on the upcoming games and potential medal winners as well. Team USA is a massive favorite to win the gold once again this year, with odds of -1200 currently, and you can’t blame the oddsmakers for it due to the fact that the starting lineup for Team USA is completely loaded.

2012 Olympics Basketball Gold Medal Futures Bet

While Team USA is -1200, an interesting choice is Spain at +600. Spain is definitely the team who has the best shot to make a run at Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, and the rest of that loaded roster, as they have both Gasol brothers, Serge Ibaka, Jose Calderon, Rudy Fernandez, and other well-known players as well.

I definitely don’t feel very strongly about Spain’s chances to knock off the United States, but if you’re looking for a long shot, I wouldn’t look further than Spain. This is mainly due to the fact that the rest of the teams in the 2012 Olympics simply don’t have the talent to keep up with Team USA’s fast pace.

2012 Olympics Basketball Opening Round Match-Up’s

United States vs. France

Interestingly enough, the third favorite to win the gold medal is France, and they will be matched up against Team USA in the first game of the group stages. France enters the game as a big time underdog of +24.5 to Team USA.

While the French National Team is by no means a weak team, the combination of the fact that Team USA is finally gelling and that this is their first Olympic match as a team should result in an easy win for the United States.

Look for France to keep things close for the first quarter or quarter and a half, but for Coach K to quickly figure out what lineup will work best against the French and for the USA to win by more than 30.

Argentina vs. Lithuania

The match-up between Argentina and Lithuania is another one that instantly caught my eye. Argentina is favored by -5.5 in this one, and this is a number that actually surprised me quite a bit. Argentina is fresh off of giving the United States a run for their money in an exhibition match that they ended up losing by only six points.

Argentina is led by a nice combination in Manu Ginobili, Luis Scola, and Carlos Delfino, who can all score the ball consistently. Lithuania hasn’t had much said about them to this point, and while I think that many of the early round match-up’s in the Olympics will be close, I think that Argentina is poised to win this game by 10.

Look for Ginobili to turn into the closer that he has the talent to be and to help lead Argentina to a cover of this -5.5 spread with ease again this Lithuanian team. Argentina has the much better talent on the court in this game and as long as they’re focused they’ll be able to cover the point spread and this game should be easy money to kick-off the 2012 Olympics.
