What Teams Look the Best Heading into Euro 2012?

The 16 teams have been split into four groups already and I must say that some teams definitely have an easier road to into the quarter-finals than others. The top two teams from each of the four groups make it into the quarter-final round. Once you can qualify for the quarter-finals you never know what could happen at Euro 2012.

Group A Winners – Russia & Greece

Russia (FIFA Rank 11) is in a weak Group A and should win the group stage without much problem. Russia only lost 1 of 10 games during qualification and the team plays a rugged style of defensive soccer. Russia can frustrate teams in the later stages and you can still currently bet Russia to win Group A at almost even money. Greece is one of the oldest teams in Euro 2012, so experience is on their side. However, the team isn’t that solid and apart from being in a weak Group A Greece doesn’t have much going.

Group B Winners – Germany & Portugal

Group B is where you want to watch during group stage. Group B is stacked with Germany (FIFA Rank 2), Holland (FIFA Rank 4) and Portugal (FIFA Rank 5). Denmark is also in the group, but they have no shot to advance. Germany is a talented young team that many expect to make the finals or win Euro 2012. Holland is also a highly rated squad, but I think the stars on Portugal have the potential to upset Netherlands in the group stage and advance as the runner-up.

Group C Winners – Spain & Italy

I’m confident that the Spaniards will be able to advance to the next stage at Euro 2012. Portugal (FIFA Rank 1) has an easy road to the next round, but there is no value betting on Portugal to win Group C. I think the Italians will make it through as well, but they need to leave their ego at the door this year or else Croatia will surprise them in group stage. Croatia advanced to the next round at the last European Championship, but that means they’ll be on more bettors’ radars this time around.

Group D Winners – England & France

There isn’t too much to talk about in Group D at Euro 2012. England (FIFA Rank 7) should be able to cruise to the next round and England actually has a solid team that could make it to the finals. France was lucky to be drawn into Group D because France is definitely not what they used to be and I don’t think France will make it past the quarters. Ukraine and Sweden are both in this group as well. Sweden could actually surprise a lot of bettors at Euro 2012 in the group stage, so watch out for them.

My Predictions to Win the 2012 European Championship

I’m betting on the Germans and English to win the Euro 2012 Championship. The Germans are full of youth and they should be able to outpace most teams deeper in the tournament. Germany is also extremely talented and if they don’t choke due to not having enough experience they should make the finals easily. My longshot pick is England to win. England has an easy group stage and Rooney will be ready to play after he serves his 2-game suspension.
