Will the Clippers Eliminate the Warriors in Game 6

Los Angeles Clippers vs. Golden State Warriors Game 6 NBA Playoff Preview

When: Thursday, May 1st 2014 at 10:30pm ET
Where: Oracle Arena in Oakland, California
Watch: Live on TNT

The Clippers just beat the Warriors (113-103) at home to take a 3-2 lead in this closely contested series. While the play on the court in the playoffs is usually the focus this series has taken on another dynamic because of the behavior of the Clippers owner on recorded audio tapes that have been released.

Everyone in sports media is talking about the Donald Sterling story, but I want to get right into my preview. These two teams aren’t going to have much time to prepare, as they’re back on the court tomorrow night in what could be the final game of the series unless the Warriors find a way to win at home.

Can the Golden State Warriors Force a Game 7?

Golden State was looking to steal back home court advantage last night, but was unable to get the job done. Both teams fought hard last night, but the big differences were free throw shooting and fast break points, which were both won by the Clippers.

LAC managed to score 21 fast break points while the Warriors were held to 13 FBP. FT shooting killed the Warriors though. Not only did they send the Clippers to the line 41 times (31 of 41), but they also shot a horrendous 68.4% from the charity stripe (13 of 19).

For the Warriors to have any chance of forcing a final game they need Stephen Curry to step up. He has played well during most of the series, but last night he only had 17 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. He also committed 8 turnovers in the game.

Another thing that has been hurting the Warriors is the depth on the Clippers bench. The Clippers are receiving a lot of help from the bench unit including Jamal Crawford (76 Points) and Darren Collison (47 Points) who have both had a couple good performances.

In my opinion the Warriors have done a good job at limiting Blake Griffin, but DeAndre Jordan has three double-doubles and he was just 1 rebound short of having four this series. The problem is that GSW lacks depth upfront due to the injury to Andrew Bogut.

If LAC wants to finish this series off and have a bit of extra rest before the Western Conference SF’s they’ll need Chris Paul to play at an elite level. He scored 20 points in G5 and led the team with 5 steals, which led to a lot of the fast break points that LAC had.

The Clippers need to toughen up in the paint as well. In G5 the Warriors scored 50 of their points in the paint, which is way too many for LAC to give up, especially with no Bogut in the line-up. Jordan and Griffin should be dominating in the paint, but they aren’t.

Key Factor That Will Determine Who Wins in Game 6

The team that has scored the most points from beyond the arc is 3-2 in this series. In the two losses both teams were hitting it from deep and the teams finished within two 3-point baskets. These teams have gone a combined 94 of 215 (43.72%) from distance.

A number of players on both teams are shooting it well, so it’ll be up to what defense can get out on the shooters. With everything on the line at the Warriors being at home I expect Curry and Klay Thompson to light it up from 3-point land and force a 7th game.

Warriors vs. Clippers Game 6 Picks

This game will come down to how the Warriors come out shooting early in the game. If they’re missing and the Clippers are able to build up a double-digit lead it’ll be over, but if the young guns on the Warriors are hitting their shots they’ll ride the crowd to a win.

The x-factor in G6 is Draymond Green who has been starting this series in place on Jermaine O’Neal. Green has two double-doubles in the series, but both came in losses. He needs to stay out of foul trouble and he also needs to be a big part of the offense.

These rivals are going to go 7 games. The Clippers haven’t been playing as good as they can and that has allowed GSW to stay in the series. They have a great fan base that will be going crazy in the Oracle Arena. I do think the Clippers will take this series in 7 though.
