  • Where: Nissan Stadium. Nashville, TN
  • When: December 31, 2017 1:00 pm EST
  • Spread: Jacksonville (+3) at Tennessee (-3)
  • Moneyline: Jacksonville (+130) at Tennessee (-150)
  • Over / Under: Over 42 (-110) vs Under 42 (-110)

If you haven’t noticed, some NFL fans have been accusing the players of a negative attitude. But a player could look a bar-stool fan in the eye and truthfully say “you started it.”

Tennessee Titans fans are so disgruntled after winning 8 out of 15 games, they’re ready to fire coach Mike Mularkey. What’s more, even though the Titans have a shot at the playoffs and are facing an elimination game, there are people in Nashville rooting for a loss so that they can get rid of him.

We’ll skip the cliche line about that being a whole lot of Mularkey. Or will we?

(Bad) jokes aside, a potential playoff bid is not something 20th century fans ever got upset about. There are fan bases that would kill to be 8-7, just once in a 5 or 10 year span. We can rest assured that the athletes think they can win this week, and win throughout January. But when does a negative buzz surrounding a head coach start to leak through? And are the cynics correct that the team’s weaknesses are so glaring, this will all be a formality anyway?

We’ll find out soon. 10-5 Jacksonville is coming to Nissan Stadium, and a loss not only sends the Titans to the golf course but hands them a non-winning season. Yes, it would also give Mularkey and his family a chance to relocate to another part of lovely America.

Vegas has made Tennessee a slight favorite in spite of all.

The ‘Cats have clinched

The Jaguars don’t have much to play for. They have clinched their division, but a 1st round bye is out of reach. Jacksonville would like to win and finish ahead of Kansas City, but in reality this is closer to an exhibition scenario.

However, the roster would like to wipe the taste of last weekend out of their mouths. Jacksonville seemed to welcome back old, bad habits in a surprising 44-33 loss to lowly San Francisco. Blake Bortles was awful, throwing 3 interceptions including a pick-6.

But the defense played better than the score indicates and is not suddenly a bad unit. Take away the loss and the points-off-turnovers surrendered, and the Jags gave up only 3.7 yards rushing. Jimmy Garoppolo had a modest day.

The question now is how much the visitors will go all-out to win with the playoffs looming and little to win.

Clashin’ Titans

The real reason for the fans’ downer mood? Try the last 3 games, a series of horrible losses to the NFC West. Tennessee has been building around a multiple offense led by the dual-threat Marcus Mariota, and an energetic defense and special teams. Early this season, it worked.

But back-to-back losses to the Cardinals and 49ers embarrassed the franchise in late fall. Offense has been flat, and the ‘D is getting worn down by ordinary teams.

DeMarco Murray was stuffed by the meek San Francisco defense, and Garoppolo was allowed almost 400 yards through the air in the 25-23 loss by the Pacific. The following week, the Titans showed life against Los Angeles but still fell to 8-7.

Tennessee did beat Jacksonville on the road. There was no such flat offense that day in September, as Derrick Henry raced for almost 100 yards. Henry will be likely to play a lot on Sunday, as Murray is unlikely to perform.

A solid running game can, in fact, solve a lot of problems…including any lack of morale on the sideline. Mariota won’t hold back keeping the ball and running, so the play-action pass will develop if Jacksonville has to commit an extra LB against the 11 x 11 charge.

AFC Football Money Line Pick: Titans over Jaguars

There’s a secret to picking this game. Coaches never, ever tell the truth in one specific scenario, and this is that scenario.

“We’re in this to win, 100% all-in,” says Coach Marrone of Jacksonville. 3rd Quarter: Bortles on sideline in baseball cap. That’s pretty much always the way it goes, since coaches aren’t stupid. What if Bortles breaks his arm in the 4th quarter of a meaningless game, and the Jags’ playoff run is over before it begins?

The regular-season Titans will beat the preseason Jags on Sunday. Best to wager before more bettors realize it.
