USA v Ghana Match #14 World Cup Preview

Start Time: Monday, June 16th 2014 at 6:00pm ET
Location: Estadio das Dunas in Natal, Brazil

USA and Ghana embark on their 2014 World Cup journey on Monday night at the Estadio das Dunas in Natal. The 3-points that are up for grabs are crucial for both of these countries if they expect to make it out of the group of death and into the knockout stage.

The bookmakers clearly expect Ghana to have enough firepower upfront to stifle the American defense although they also expect it to be a low scoring match. I think the match is a toss-up, but I do expect there to be limited scoring chances, which I’ll explain below.

Why USA Will Win

Jurgen Klinsmann has been very quiet about his plans leading up to the Americans opening World Cup match, but it’s expected that he’ll use a 4-2-3-1 formation against Ghana. The reason he wants to use that formation is because it’ll improve the defense.

Michael Bradley and Clint Dempsey will be the keys to winning this match for the US. Jozy Altidore will likely be the lone striker and that’s a bit worrisome, as he hasn’t scored a goal in over six months, but his size/toughness should open up space for the midfield.

Kyle Beckerman will have a tough ask trying to defend the Ghana counterattack, especially with Kevin Prince-Boateng bearing down on him constantly. USA needs to set the tone early in the match by aggressively attacking rather than sitting back.

If the Americans let Ghana dictate the pace they’re in trouble. The US needs to push forward as well as move their DB’s up when they have possession of the football. Ghana has a tendency to move their midfield up and the US has to look for transition goals.

Why Ghana Will Win

Ghana will employ a 4-4-2 or a 4-2-3-1 formation depending on whether Majeed Waris can play in the match. If Waris plays Ghana will use a 4-4-2 to provide Asamoah Gyan help in the attacking front, which will be tough for the Americans back line to deal with.

This team has a ton of speed and it’ll be hard for the Americans in 1 v 1 battles down the wings. Ghana likes to rely heavily on their midfielders (Sully Muntari & Andre Ayew) to run down the wings and cross the football into the box to their big athletic strikers.

I’m confident that the Ghana attack will be fine, but their back line is far from strong. John Boye and John Mensah both have a lot of questions to answer. If the Ghana defense can shutdown Dempsey and Bradley they’ll likely come out with the result they need.

Ghana v USA H2H

These two squads have played each other in the last two World Cups and Ghana has won both matches. In 2006 Ghana won 2-1 and in 2010 they also won 2-1 although it took extra time to win the match. Will Ghana be able to win the match again in Brazil?

USA v Ghana Best Bets

The Americans have to win this match to qualify for the knockout stage, as they still face Portugal and Germany. I’m not 100% sold on the US being able to shutdown Ghana for the entire 90 minutes, but I expect the US to strike first on a soft Ghana back line.

Ghana has too much power upfront to not score at least a goal against the Americans. Tim Howard isn’t the best goalkeeper either, so Ghana should be able to solve him. The bookmakers expect a very low scoring match, but I expect a minimum of 2-3 goals.

Gyan may be the only striker on the field for Ghana it looks like and with the way they like to cross the football he should have a few opportunities in the box to put the football into the back of the net. At these odds I’m willing to take a chance on the big striker.

Both teams know how crucial this match is and while I can see either team winning 2-1 with a late goal I expect the match to be tight throughout the duration and the teams will have to settle for a 1-1 draw with goals by Asamoah and Dempsey.
