USA v Germany Betting Tips – 2014 World Cup

USA v Germany Match Preview – Group G

When: Thursday, June 26th 2014 at 12:00pm ET
Where: Arena Pernambuco in Recife, Brazil
Watch: Live on CBS Sports

USA was less than a minute away from qualifying for the knockout stage in their last match against Portugal on Sunday. All they needed to do was hold on to their 2-1 lead, but a turnover by Michael Bradley in stoppage time at midfield cost them the 3 points.

The American team is still in great shape to qualify through Group G, but they can’t afford a blowout loss to the Germans later this week in their final group stage match. If they win or draw they’ll qualify and even with a loss they have a great chance to advance.

Germany isn’t guaranteed to advance, but they’re basically a lock to move on. It’ll be interesting to see how Germany will play in this match, as they know they’re in great shape already to move on. Will they sit back or will they look to dominate the Americans?

Latest Betting Lines in Germany v USA

Bet on all of the World Cup action at the US-friendly Bovada Sportsbook.

I have been impressed by the play of the USA in the World Cup, but should the Germans only be a –140 favorite? I honestly think the odds on the Germans will continue to shorten, so I’d jump on them now. I can’t imagine the Americans will compete with Germany.

Will Germany Lock Up Group G with a Win?

Germany and the USA both had a chance this past weekend to lock up their spot in the knockout stage. Both teams ended up with a 2-2 draw in their second match although the US draw was much more heartbreaking, as they conceded a late equalizer.

Jurgen Klinsmann will have a lot of insider knowledge of his opponent in this match, as he used to play and coach for Germany, but is that going to help the Americans compete? I expect the more talented team to win this match, but it’ll be a defensive nail biter.

USA will have a defensive game plan against Germany, as they’ll likely advance as long as they don’t get blown out. Germany put up four goals on Portugal and that can’t happen in this match. The Germans are likely to play it relatively safe, which will benefit USA.

The Americans have played relatively strong on defense, but they’ve had multiple lapses. Nani scored in the opening five minutes on USA after the back line failed miserably to clear the football. However, they did tighten up fairly well after that early blunder.

I just don’t expect that they’ll be able to shutdown the likes of Thomas Muller, Mario Gotze and Mesut Ozil. Miroslav Klose can also come off the bench to provide a spark like he did against Ghana, but I don’t think Klose will play until he’s needed later in the WC.

Clint Dempsey is playing hurt, but he has been the vocal point of the US offense. He has now scored a goal in each match played by USA, but trying to solve the Germans may be difficult with the likes of Mats Hummels and Per Mertesacker defending the back line.

Germany had a 10-minute window of trouble against Ghana where they conceded two goals on poor defensive play, but other than that the Germans have been solid on defense. USA may be able to score a goal, but I wouldn’t expect much offense from them.

USA v Germany Predictions

Bet on Germany v USA alternative markets at Bet365 (No USA).

I expect Germany to beat the US defense at least once in this match, as they simply have too much world-class talent upfront. I also wouldn’t be surprised if the Germans dominated and won by 3-4 goals although I expect USA to stack the defensive box this match.

This bet is an obvious one based on how I see this match playing out. We’ve seen a lot of goals in Group G up to this point, but with what’s at stakes in this match I completely expect these two teams to focus on playing defense first rather than scoring goals.

I’m not loving the odds on this bet, but at +220 I’m still going to take a shot on the match being 0-0 at HT. I expect more action in the 2H, but in the 1H both teams are likely to feel each other out a bit and I don’t think we’ll see more than a handful of shots on goal.
