It’s not always easy putting a tout column on the internet. Sometimes, a last-moment change or unexpected twist to a sporting event can present a dilemma, as a simple update will not rescue a preview of three tennis competitors each upset by nobodies in round one, or two World Series favourites who didn’t even make the MLB playoffs.

If four sides remain in a knock-out round, one of four possible matches will make up the final. Any “futures” or single-match betting article will focus on the most likely opponents, but then what if there’s a surprise?

There is a cracking amount of action on the UEFA Women’s Euro – and wagering will only increase as the semifinals arrive this Thursday. But for enthusiasts who surf to MSB a bit tardy, but still before the August 6th final, we’re leaving nothing to chance. Let’s have a look at the semifinals, plus all four potential payoff matches at the Women’s European Championships.

Semifinal – Netherlands vs England

From the reactions of pundits and punters, one would think the England ladies are total upstarts who, somehow, knocked off the Frenchwomen in a “Miracle on Grass” quarterfinal. The Lionesses did manage to conquer France for the first time in 43 years – no small accomplishment – but they have been a competitive mainstay at this football championship for decades and finished runners-up in 2009. They are also the highest-ranked international team of the four still in the hunt.

The Dutch just dusted off Sweden in a two-nil result and should not be taken lightly. The side has defended just as impressively as England through four games, and GK Sari van Veenendaal may need to keep a clean sheet through regulation minutes for a minor upset to occur. New Arsenal addition Vivianne Miedema has scored 42 goals for the Oranje and can create chances even in a dull contest.

Recommended bet: It could be headed to penalties. (+200) on a draw after regulation minutes/extra time looks like value.

Semifinal – Denmark vs Austria

As MSB loyalists know, the opportunity for a smart wager can often arise when bookies base lines on very recent history and forget to macro-analyze the opponents. However, to ignore the past couple of weeks would not do justice to the upset potential in this “forgotten” semifinal.

Denmark is favoured (by a small margin) to beat Austria in the early match on Thursday 8/3. No doubt the Red and Whites look fantastic after coming from behind to beat Germany on Sunday, with veteran back Theresa Nielson joining the attack to score the winner.

But no side has looked better than the newcomer Austrians, who achieved a draw with France in group play and stared down Spain on penalty kicks in the quarterfinals.

Recommended bet: Austria on the money line.

Possible Final Match #1 – England vs Denmark

If the English ladies win their semifinal over Holland, it won’t be by a lot of goals. After all, they’re up against a host country, with excellent goalkeepers minding both sides. So in a Lionesses versus Danes gold-medal match, the over is likely to be a value play.

By then, England will be gaining a short-order reputation as a gritty straight-ahead side which scores when necessary. But that would overlook the brilliant tournament Jodie Taylor is having. The 31 year-old forward opened the 2017 Euros with a hattrick against Scotland, and it will not be surprising if she turns in another explosive performance before the honours are handed out.

Recommended: Over (likely 2 or 2 1/2 total goals)

Possible Final #2 – England vs Austria

It’s hard to imagine a such a nascent international contender as Austria answering the bell against England in the final – not with the kind of momentum Three Lions will be bringing to the pitch by that point.

Recommended: England on the money line as a modest favourite.  Austria’s young keeper Manuela Zinsberger will keep the score tight no matter what, so the under could also be a value play if England happened to explode in the semifinal.

Possible Final #3 – Netherlands vs Denmark

This match would be an into-the-fire moment for new Netherlands coach Sarina Wiegman, leading a team in its first Euro final. Look for a cautious match, with captain Pernille Harder or another striker getting a golden goal for the Danes.

Recommended: Denmark on the money line. Also the under.

Possible Final #4 – Netherlands vs Austria

The pride of Holland would have the upper hand in such an unexpected final. Austria has several players in key roles whose peak years are well ahead of them.  Netherlands captain Mandy van den Berg will lead a more experienced group to joyous victory on a native pitch, should this strange match-up decide the winner’s trophy.

Recommended: Netherlands ATS or on the money line.
