UCLA vs. Oregon Betting Lines

#12 UCLA Bruins vs. #3 Oregon Ducks Preview

Kick-Off Time: Saturday, October 26th 2013 at 7:00pm ET
Location: Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Oregon
Network: Watch Live on ESPN

The UCLA Bruins 5-1 (5-1 ATS) lost their first game of the season last week on the road against Stanford (24-10). I’m excited to find out how real this Bruins team is this week, as they can either fold to the Oregon Ducks 7-0 (5-1-1 ATS) are play them tough.

Latest Point Spread in the Bruins vs. Ducks

The point spread in the Bruins vs. Ducks opened up at –21 points in favor of the home team (Oregon). This line has been bouncing around the last couple days and is now up to –23 points for Oregon. That’s a huge spread between two fierce Pac-12 rivals.

Can Brett Hundley & the Bruins Bounce Back

There is no denying that Brett Hundley had his worst game of the season against Stanford. Hundley finished the game with a QBR of 34.7 after completing 24/39 pass attempts for 192 yards, 1 TD and 2 INT’s. He needs to play way better this week for the Bruins.

UCLA ranks #23 in passing yards (301.7 PYPG), #38 in rushing yards (198.5 RYPG) and #21 in point scored (39.8 PPG). I expect to see this offense come out like they have all season other than last week and put up points against this Ducks defensive unit.

The Ducks defense is better than in years past, but they still allow 251.2 PYPG (82nd), 123.5 RYPG (25th) and 17.3 PPG (12th). The last two weeks Oregon has allowed 24 points (Washington) and 38 points (Washington State). The defense has been slowing down a bit.

It’s going to be extremely difficult to try and win this game for the Bruins and it’s not because of the offense. The Bruins are playing well on defense, but they don’t have the speed or talent to be able to shutdown Mariota and the Ducks lightning fast offense.

Will Marcus Mariota Continue His Chase for the Heisman Trophy

The Ducks QB Marcus Mariota is the frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy, but this will be his biggest test. The Ducks have only had to play one ranked opponent (#16 Washington) so far this season and the Bruins are much better than the Huskies when playing 100%.

You’re not going to find a better offense in college football. Oregon averages 310.7 PYPG (19th), 332.4 RYPG (2nd) and 57.6 PPG (2nd) offensively this season. Mariota leads the offense and he already has 2051 passing yards (19 TD’s) and 493 rushing yards (9 TD’s).

The UCLA defense has given up 147 RYPG (47th), 210.2 PYPG (28th) and 19.2 PPG (18th), which isn’t bad by any stretch. They’ve had to play some tough offenses already this season including Nebraska, California and Stanford. Those 3 teams combined for 55 points.

How Important the Turnover Battle Will Be

UCLA has to force turnovers on the Oregon offense to try to keep up on the scoreboard on Saturday. The Bruins average 1.5 INT’s per game (14th) while the Ducks average 1.8 INT’s per game (4th). Both defenses can clearly force interceptions on QB’s.

However, Mariota hasn’t been intercepted this season whereas Hundley has thrown six interceptions. Hundley can’t afford to toss a single INT in this match-up if he wants to give his team a fighting shot. It’ll take a near perfect game from Hundley to win.

Ducks vs. Bruins H2H

These two teams have a storied history in the Pac-12 and they’re bitter rivals dating back to 1928. Last year these two teams didn’t play each other, but in the last four games (Since 2008) Oregon is 4-0 (2-2 ATS), but they’ve only covered one big spread in 2010.

In the last meeting the Ducks were huge –31 point favorites in 2011 and they won 49-31, but didn’t cover. With the rivalry that exists between these two teams I find it hard to believe that the Bruins are going to fold after last week’s loss and I think they’ll cover.

UCLA vs. Oregon Predictions

  • Bet on the UCLA Bruins +23 (-110) @ Bovada
  • UCLA can get their season back on track with a win and it would open up the Pac-12 completely. The Bruins have a great offense and if the defense can get a few stops I expect them to cover. This game has the potential to get ugly if Oregon gets up big early and Hundley struggles with turnovers though.
