Troy vs UAB Betting Odds

What: Troy Trojans at UAB Blazers NCAA Football
When: Saturday, September 1, noon EST
Where: Legion Field, Birmingham, Alabama

A lot of sharp college football bettors will have their eyes on Birmingham, Alabama when the Troy Trojans visit the UAB Blazers. The betting public won’t have much interest in watching two teams that went 3-9 last year go head-to-head, but this actually a very interesting match up.

If you look closely at this game, you’ll find two schools that don’t think much of each other and a series that’s had several close, controversial endings. It makes for some good week 1 action and a low-key point spread that’s not tainted by emotion.

UAB Gets No Respect

The Blazers are one of those teams that sharp bettors like to keep an eye on as the season progresses. Last season they wen 3-9 (7-5 ATS) and shocked the then-#22-Southern Miss Golden Eagles late in the season. They went into that game as 23 point dogs and wound up winning 34-31.

While they’re definitely an underrated team, they may find themselves struggling early in the season under head coach Garrick McGee. The 39-year-old McGee is about as green as they get with exactly zero wins or losses as the top dog. He’s also working with a team that’s returning only 11 starters.

One starter they’ll be glad to have back is quarterback Jonathan Perry (174-300, 2042 yds, 10 TDs, 8 INT). Perry doesn’t get much notice but can definitely have some big days.

Defensively, this is a very young, inexperienced team that may struggle a bit early. That, of course is exactly what the Trojans want to hear.

Troy Trojans Stacked with Starters

The Troy Trojans also went 3-9 (3-9 ATS) last season. Interestingly, they played a very close game against the then-#14 Arkansas Razorback. They didn’t win, but when unranked 23-point underdogs lose by only, we’ll call it a success.

What Troy brings into this fight are nine returning starters on the offense and six on the defense. These guys not only hung tough with teams like Clemson, they also remember a few close calls with UAB. This is circled game for Troy and they’ll be going up against a Blazer team that doesn’t remember the controversial close calls in this series.

We’re expecting a much improved Troy defense to take the field and hold the Blazers to a low scoring affair. Despite Perry’s experience, these guys are likely to come up with a few, momentum shifting big plays.

UAB vs. Troy Prediction

Despite its low profile, this game is a big-time rivalry and both schools will come in guns blazing. But when the chaos of the game takes over, we’re expecting the more experienced Trojans to jump out ahead and stay there.

Don’t write off UAB completely, they’ll surprise a couple opponents before the season is done. Unfortunately, the Trojans won’t be one of them. Look for a low scoring game with Troy winning by a TD. We’re taking Troy -6 (-110) on the point spread, and we like the money line as well. The Bovada Sportsbook doesn’t have their Troy vs. UAB money line posted yet, but Troy is -240 at BetOnline.com.

On the over/under, our prediction is that the game will end under 60, so we’re taking the under of 63 (-110).
