Titans vs. Jaguars Betting Preview – NFL Week 16

Tennessee Titans vs. Jacksonville Jaguars – AFC South

When: Thursday, December 18th 2014 at 8:30pm ET
Where: EverBank Field in Jacksonville, Florida
Watch: NFL Network

I’m not too sure what the NFL was thinking when they scheduled this match-up on Thursday night football. The Tennessee Titans 2-12 (3-10-1 ATS) and Jacksonville Jaguars 2-12 (4-9-1 ATS) will meet in an AFC South game where neither team will want to win.

You may wonder why I’m saying neither team will want to win. Well, at the moment four teams have two wins and they’re fighting for the #1 pick in the upcoming draft. After last week’s FG fest on TNF I actually expect this game to be more exciting to watch.

Action has been coming in on the Jaguars and I’m not surprised. I actually think they’ll take this game with ease. They don’t mind if they fall back a bit in the draft because they don’t need a QB. The total is low, but I have no lean and won’t be betting the O/U.

TEN @ JAC Stats at a Glance

On paper these two teams are practically identical, but not in a good way. Both of these teams struggle to score points, move the football or stop opposing teams. Something will have to give in this match-up and I expect the home team to want the win more.

Why I’m Betting on the Jags to Cover ATS

My pick on the Jaguars is pending, as the status on Blake Bortles isn’t known yet. If Bortles starts I’ll be all over the Jags. The Titans are in even more trouble at QB, as Zach Mettenberger and Jake Locker are injured, which means Charlie Whitehurst will start.

The Jaguars may only have two wins, but both have come at EverBank Field. Jacksonville just played the Ravens tough on the road last week as well despite losing (20-12). Tennessee on the other hand has lost six games in a row since their bye week.

These two teams played earlier in the season (W6) and the Titans won the game (16-14), but that was because they blocked a FG in the final seconds. Since that point in time the Jaguars have improved quite a bit while the Titans have been getting worse.

Jacksonville is averaging 198.4 PYPG (29th) and 95.4 RYPG (25th) this season. The Titans defense has been allowing 239.1 PYPG (18th) and 139.6 RYPG (32nd). In the first H2H meeting the Jags actually had much more success through the air compared to the ground.

Bortles threw for 336 passing yards, 1 TD and 1 INT, but the Jags only rushed for 82 yards and 1 TD. Cecil Shorts led the team with 10 receptions for 103 yards, but he lost a fumble. If the Jags want to win at home they need to try and limit the turnovers to zero.

Tennessee’s offense is averaging 221.4 PYPG (22nd) and 86.4 RYPG (27th), but those numbers are going to take a hit with Whitehurst starting at QB. He’s a terrible passer and the Jags will be able to stack the box to stop the run and put pressure on the QB.

Titans vs. Jaguars Picks

The Jags are 2-1 in the last three games at home against the Titans, but Tennessee has won the last two meetings. With all of the injuries at QB for the Titans I can’t imagine them playing well on offense, as they’ve used three different QB’s in the last month.

Tennessee is also banged up at WR and that’s not going to help them either. You never know what’s going to happen in a game like this where both teams are terrible, but there are enough things going in favor of the Jags that I feel it’s worth betting on them.
