The 2012 Indianapolis 500 Odds & Predictions

The 96th Indianapolis 500 (Indy 500) is this weekend (Sunday, May 27th 2012) at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. I must admit that I watch much more NASCAR and F1 nowadays compared to IndyCar, but the Indy 500 excites me each year. Qualifying is now over for the 2012 Indy 500 and we’re going to take a look at some of the best bets for this year’s race.

Latest Odds to Win the 2012 Indy 500 (As of May 22nd)

• Ryan Briscoe +350
• Helio Castroneves +525
• Will Power +650
• James Hinchliffe +800
• Marco Andretti +850
• Dario Franchitti +925
• Scott Dixon +960
• Ryan Hunter Reay +1250
• Tony Kanaan +1350
• Graham Rahal +3500
• JR Hildebrand +4100
• Rubens Barichello +4600
• Alex Tagliani +5200
• Oriol Servia +8500
• Ed Carpenter +8500
• Takuma Sato +8500
• Justin Wilson +9000

My Best Bets for the 2012 Indy 500

Ryan Briscoe qualified in the pole position after narrowly beating James Hinchliffe by .003 seconds. Last year the Indy 500 was won by Dan Wheldon after JR Hildebrand crashed on the final corner to lose the lead. Hildebrand will want to have a good race this weekend to make up for last year’s mistake, but unfortunately Hildebrand will be starting in 18th position. Hildebrand +4100 has some value based on last year’s results for a bit of insurance, but betting him to finish top 5 may be smarter.

Helio Castroneves is currently the 2nd favourite in the race at +525. Castroneves struggled at the Indy 500 last year, but he has already won 1 race this season (St. Petersburg) and looks to be a contender this weekend. Helio will start the race in 6th place and will have a chance to win the Indy 500 on Sunday. Another racer many bettors will be looking at is Will Power. Power is +650 right now and that’s pretty good vale considering that Power has won the last 3 races in IndyCar this season.

Power will want to continue his dominance and he qualified in 5th place for the race, so he’ll have a great starting position. Two of the other racers that have received a lot of attention this past week include Andretti +850 and Franchitti +925. Franchitti will be starting down in 16th place and avoid betting him to win, but Andretti qualified in 4th place and has a lot of expectations. In the past few years Andretti has performed great in the Indy 500, but he hasn’t been able to nab the victory yet.

Scott Dixon also has a great shot to win this race although I’m not sold on him. Dixon did lousy in qualifying and will start in 15th place for the Indy 500 plus he hasn’t been finishing on the podium lately. Dixon started the season by finishing in 2nd place in two straight races, but he has been left off the podium the last two races. There are a handful of driver’s that have a great shot at winning the race and that’s why the odds are all pretty good.

At the end of the day my picks for the Indy 500 this year are Will Power +650 and Marco Andretti +850. I’m betting on both for a .5 unit this weekend and will be watching the race on Sunday. You can bet on the Indianapolis 500 instantly at one of the top Blackberry sports betting sites while on the go this weekend, so there is no excuse to miss the big race.
