* Texas vs. Oklahoma betting lines updated Saturday morning.

Betting on college football rivalries like the Red River Shootout requires a real understanding of the tense dynamics between big-time football programs like the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners. These are two teams that don’t ever expect to lose, whether they’re having a good season or not.

It’s also a game that brings out plenty of amateurs that wreak havoc with point spread and over/under odds. That means sharp bettors can find value if they can pick apart the strengths and weaknesses each team brings to play.

We already know that Texas is gunning for revenge after last year’s devastating 55-17 loss to the hated Sooners. We also know that Oklahoma has yet to beat a ranked team this season, and a loss to the Longhorns could seriously impact their ranking. That makes this a crucial game for everyone involved.

Texas Longhorns Betting Lines & Analysis

Best Texas Point Spread: +3 (-105) at BetOnline.com, or +3.5 (-115) at Bovada.lv
Best Texas Money Line: +140 at BetOnline.com

The Texas Longhorns won’t be short of motivation after last year’s loss to the Sooners and last week’s 48-45 loss to #8 West Virginia. They also shouldn’t be short on touchdowns, after averaging 46.8 points/game so far this season.

QB David Ash comes into the Cotton Bowl with his own reasons for winning as well. In last year’s game he turned in a miserable performance, completing 11-20 for 107 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT’s and 4 sacks. This season has been good to him so far, going 107-138 for 1276 yards, 11 TD’s, 1 INT and only 4 sacks.

Games like the shootout with the Mountaineers are fun for fans to watch, but must cause heart attacks in defensive coordinators. We know that WVU QB Geno Smith is having an insane year, but giving up 460 yards total offense and 45 points is bad. Worse yet, the Longhorns allowed WVU to convert 5-5 on 4th down attempts.

Despite the loss, facing a big-time opponent like the Mountaineers is the perfect warm up for a clash with the Sooners.

Oklahoma Sooners Betting Lines & Analysis

Best Oklahoma Point Spread: -3 (-115) at BetOnline.com, or -3.5 (-105) at Bovada.lv
Best Oklahoma Money Line: -160 at BetOnline.com

Oklahoma is four games into the season, but they’ve yet to really show that they’re worthy of that #13 ranking. The Sooners have struggled to find their way against lesser teams like UTEP. When faced with a ranked opponent, #15 Kansas State, they lost 24-19. OU looked a lot better against Texas Tech last week, winning 41-20 and covering the point spread. And after losing their last three in Lubbock, that should be a nice confidence booster.

Sooner QB Landry Jones had a huge day against the Red Raiders completing 25-40 for 259 yards, two TD’s and no INT’s. He clearly made good use of the bye week and so did the Oklahoma O-line. They gave him plenty of time to work and made it look easy.

On the other side of the ball, the Oklahoma Sooners held Texas Tech to just 89 rushing yards (plus 271 passing). More importantly, they forced three turnovers. Fans of the Red River Shootout will recall that Oklahoma forced seven Texas turnovers last year, while only giving it up once themselves.

Texas vs. Oklahoma Betting Lines & Free Picks

Texas/OU is a huge regional event that sees plenty of betting action every year. So far the point spread hasn’t moved much, and that tells us how closely matched these teams really are.

Texas vs. Oklahoma Point Spread

Normally the Red River Shootout is more like the Red River Blowout, but the sportsbooks don’t seem to think that this year. On the Texas side, David Ash has matured a lot since last year, and as for Landry Jones, the guy is a force of nature.

If the Texas defense shows up for this game, that three-point line will definitely be in the ball park. Still, after last year’s shellacking, we’re expecting Texas to win SU.

I’m taking Texas +3 (-105) at BetOnline.com.

Texas vs. OU Money Line

Teams with a point to prove are tough to beat, and I think the Sooners are frequently overrated. They’re a name brand teams with a huge national following that always seems to get the benefit of the doubt from the betting public. I’m pretty certain that Texas won’t lose two in a row, but I prefer Texas +3 points on the spread versus +140 on the money line. I think this will be a close game either way, and +3 is the way to go here.

Since I’m picking a Texas win, I don’t like -160 on the Oklahoma money line.

Texas vs. Oklahoma Over/Under

Both teams have shown an ability to put up huge numbers on unranked teams, but have struggled with ranked opponents. The Texas vs. Oklahoma over/under is 59 (-110) on either side at BetOnline.com, and Bovada has yet to post their game totals.

I think we have a slight edge on the over, but I’m going to limit my wager to 1/2 unit.
