Syracuse vs. North Carolina Point Spread and Over/Under Betting

Syracuse Orange vs. North Carolina Tar Heels Final Four Preview

When: Saturday, April 2nd 2016 at 8:45pm ET
Where: NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas
Watch: TBS

WHO picked the #10 Syracuse Orange to make the Final Four in their brackets? I know I didn’t, but here we are. The Orange play the #1 North Carolina Tar Heels, the lone #1 seed left in the tournament. There has been a lot of discussion as to whether the Orange should have even made the tourney, but they’ve silenced any doubters.

The Cinderella story has been exciting, but it’d be shocking if Syracuse advances. Playing against the zone is tough for a team with little experience against that defense, but UNC are 2-0 against Syracuse this year. They know what to expect from the Orange, which makes the upset even more improbable.

2016 March Madness Final Four Betting at Bovada

Most of the bets (70%+) have been on UNC to win and cover ATS. The public and sharps are both betting on UNC. While, I expect the Tar Heels to win, the point spread is higher than I expected. Bettors are banking on there being little scoring as well. Nearly 80% of bets in the over/under market are on under 144.5 points.

Syracuse vs. UNC statistical analysis

UNC are clearly the better team. Syracuse are better defensively thanks to their zone defense, but UNC are better in every other category (Tied in blocks). The Orange rank 25th nationally in points allowed, but in the H2H games against the Tar Heels this year, Syracuse have allowed 84 and 75 points.

Orange vs. Tar Heels Final Four picks

UNC won the first H2H meeting by 11 points thanks in large part to a 21 point outing from Isaiah Hicks off the bench. Hicks went 11-13 from the FT line. He isn’t going to replicate that performance. In the second meeting, the Orange kept the game close down to the wire and I expect more of the same on Saturday.

North Carolina shot 52.5% from the field n the first H2H game, but Syracuse held UNC to 41.2% shooting from the field in the second match-up. Syracuse is going to tempt UNC into throwing up the deep ball. In the two previous H2H games, the Tar Heels have shot a combined 9-41(22%) on 3-pointers.

Marcus Paige has shot 2-13 from distance in the two previous meetings. Paige is playing well in the tourney, but he can’t settle for 3s against the Orange zone. Feeding Brice Johnson should be the Tar Heels main priority, as he has been playing great. Johnson is averaging 21.0 PPG and 9.8 RPG in the tournament.

Paige, Justin Jackson and Joel Berry II have been providing great guard play for UNC. All three starting guards have reached double-digits in points in every game. Syracuse haven’t been getting consistent offense, but the best two starters have been Michael Gbinije and Malachi Richardson.

Syracuse will look to defend the paint and keep Johnson quiet, forcing UNC to shoot more 3s. There’s a chance the Tar Heels could heat up and blowout the Orange, but I’m putting my money on Syracuse keeping it close and covering ATS. The bookies set this line too high, yet most of the bets are still on UNC to cover.

Syracuse vs. UNC over/under predictions

The first game between these two teams had 157 points and the second game had 145 points. That’s with UNC shooting terribly from distance. Syracuse has been winning with defense, but they’re going to need to score a few more points to keep this one close. Both teams will score 70+ points like in the two previous meetings.
