Switzerland v France – 2014 World Cup Match #25 Preview (Group E)

When: Friday, June 20th 2014 at 3:00pm ET
Where: Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador, Brazil
Watch: CBC Sports

In the past France has struggled in their opening World Cup match, but this year they trounced Honduras (3-0). Karim Benzema was the man of the match, as he scored a brace. The French only allowed 2 shots on goal and looked like a team ready to play.

Switzerland went down in the 22nd minute of their match against Ecuador, but they fought back hard and Haris Seferovic scored in the 93rd minute to give the Swiss a 2-1 win. The Swiss outplayed Ecuador, but they’ll need an improvement to contend with France.

The French have opened up as a big favorite to beat the Swiss and basically lock-up Group E in the process. The Swiss will need to be defensive minded to keep this match in reach, so I lean to the match staying under the total and the odds are great.

Will Either Team be able to Lock Up Group E

These two teams are expected to advance in Group E and with a win for either team they’d basically lock up the group. Neither team is going to want to leave this match without a point, so therefore I expect this match to be rather dull with few scoring chances.

The last time these two teams met in the World Cup was back in 2006. They played each other twice during qualification for the WC plus once during the WC in Germany and all three of those matches ended in low scoring draws (0-0, 1-1 & 0-0).

Switzerland’s only hope is to play strong defensively in this match and after watching them against Ecuador I don’t expect them to be able to stop the French attack for the full 90 minutes. They allowed Ecuador to free up men in the box on multiple occasions.

France has a much more potent attack as well with Benzema, Giroud, Remy and Valbuena. The real key is their strong midfield (Cabaye, Matuidi & Pogba) that can open up space quickly for the forwards. The Swiss will likely falter under the constant pressure.

The Swiss were fortunate to have two substitutes score their goals in the opening match. The starters were shutdown by Ecuador and I can’t imagine the Swiss being able to solve the French back line that only conceded two shots on goal in their 1st match.

Switzerland v France Best Bets

I don’t like the vig on the France 1X2 line, but at almost 2/1 I really like France to win to nil in this match. Switzerland didn’t show me anything offensively in their opening match whereas France looked hungry to set the tone for the tournament right out of the gates.

The French are strong defensively with the likes of Sakho, Evra, Varane and Debuchy. Switzerland is very limited upfront and scoring goals isn’t what the Swiss excel at. You never know what can happen with these win to nil bets, but I like the value on this line a lot.

Benzema was electric in the opening match and by the way the Swiss looked defensively in their opening game I expect Benzema to have multiple scoring opportunities. He won’t come near his shot total from his last game, but he’s the likely goalscorer for France.

I really think the French will look to take control of this match early like they did against Honduras. The Swiss are a better team, but not by much. They lack a superstar player that can change a match on his own. I expect France to win 2-0 with an early 1H goal.

I’m also going to roll with a double on France to win and Benzema to score a goal in the match, as I think that’s the likely scenario in this match. Weird things have been happening in most matches during the WC, but I expect this match to play out how it should.
