Swansea v Manchester United Matchday #1 Preview

When: Saturday, August 17th 2013 at 5:30pm GMT
Where: Liberty Stadium in Landore, Swansea

Swansea hosts Manchester United in week 1 of the Premier League campaign on Sky Sports. Manchester United (89 Points) will look to win the trophy again this season while Swansea is eager to improve upon their 9th place finish (46 Points) in 2012/13 and they’ll hope newly signed Bony can assist them.

Latest 1X2, Asian Handicap & Over/Under Odds

The Red Devils are favourites and you can still get them at 1.90 odds. The odds are bound to drop as we get closer to the match. Bookies expect lots of scoring in the opening day match and the best odds on the O/U 2.5 goals market is 1.80 right now, but past H2H match-ups haven’t been high scoring.

Can Swansea Upset Manchester United at Liberty Stadium?

Manchester United (28-5-5) has kept their trophy winning squad the same minus Paul Scholes who retired. The team had a +49 goal differential (1st) last campaign and that’s unlikely to change unless a late deal sees Wayne Rooney leave the squad.

Robin Van Persie (26), Wayne Rooney (12) and Chicharito (10) scored in double digits for Man Utd last season. Scoring was never a problem, but the back line struggled at times compared to the other T4 teams in the league and that’ll need to improve.

Swansea (11-13-14) finished with a -4 goal differential and they were below the league average in goals scored (1.24 GPG vs. 1.40 GPG). The team went out and spent £12M on striker Wilfried Bony who has been looking good in early friendly matches.

Bony scored 32 league goals in 32 appearances with Vitesse in the Dutch league last season. He should be able to help solve the goal scoring issues at Swansea. If Michu can tally close to 18 goals again Swansea will improve on their finish from last season.

Man Utd went 12-5-2 in away matches and their stats on the road dropped compared to their home stats. In away matches they scored an average of 2.16 GPG and conceded 1.26 GPG. Swansea scored 1.47 GPG and conceded 1.37 GPG in home matches.

These two have played each other four times in the Premier League the L2 seasons and Man Utd has gone 3-1-0 while outscoring Swansea 6-2 in those matches. The draw came last season in the match at Liberty Stadium (1-1), but Man Utd outplayed Swansea.

Evra opened the scoring (15 Mins), but Michu scored shortly after (29 Mins). The Red Devils won the shots on target battle 16-10 and also held a small edge in possession. Bony will add a new dynamic, but I don’t think it’ll be enough to beat United.

You can’t tell much from friendly matches, but Man Utd has been conceding a lot of goals in their friendly matches against weak opposition. With the addition of Bony upfront Swansea has a legitimate attack that could spell problems for the United back line.

Swansea v Manchester United Best Bets

In the two matches last season both teams scored and I expect that trend to continue. This should be a great banker for the first week of the Premier League. Swansea is 1-0-1 in Europa League Qualifying with a 4-0 win and 0-0 draw against Malmo FF.

Bony and Michu seem to be developing chemistry together and Man Utd has looked a bit shaky defending in friendlies. There is little doubt that the Red Devils will score at least one goal. United was only held scoreless twice in away matches last season.

The scores in the two matches between these teams last season were 2-1 for Man Utd and a 1-1 draw. Swansea has done well to limit the scoring chances of Manchester United in their H2H matches and I could see either a 2-1 or 1-1 scoreline again.

A 1-1 draw pays 8.50, a Manchester United 2-1 win pays 9.00 and a Swansea 2-1 win pays 19.00 right now. Swansea is unlikely to win, but I don’t want to enter the 1X2 market or handicap markets, as I want to see how Bony/Michu look against United first.

Goal scoring markets are still unavailable right now, but Michu should be considered as the match nears closer. Michu scored in both of the league matches last season and with Bony now he’ll have more help upfront to develop scoring chances.
