Carolina Panthers vs. Denver Broncos Super Bowl Preview

Bet on Super Bowl 50Kick-Off: Sunday, February 7th 2016 at 6:30pm ET
Venue: Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California
TV: CBS

I’VE read a wealth of great storylines, statistics and trends this past week. We’re now less than a week from the Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos battling it out at Levi’s Stadium in Super Bowl 50. Will Cam Newton be able to cap off an incredible season or will Peyton Manning claim his second career SB ring?

The point spread opened up at -4 in favor of Carolina, but has been bet up to -6. There’s no way we’re going to see this spread go over a TD. In fact, it could drop again if we see some Broncos money come in. The total is up a 1/2 point and nearly 75% of the bets made have been on the over.

Stats pack

I feel like I say this most years, but defense is vital to making a SB run. Denver have the best defense in the league and the Panthers aren’t far behind. However, Carolina have the offensive edge. They have scored a ton of points against nearly every opponent, including 80 points in their two playoff games.

Panthers vs. Broncos betting preview

Super Bowl 50 PicksHere are some interesting stats. This is the first time in history that two QBs selected at #1 in the NFL draft will play each other in the Super Bowl. Manning will become the oldest QB to start in a SB at 39 years of age, while Newton can become the first QB to win the Heisman, National Championship, NFL MVP and Super Bowl. After beating Seattle (31-24) and then crushing Arizona (49-15), Carolina seem like an easy bet. The Panthers became the eighth team in NFL history to win a conference championship by 30+ points. However, only two of the previous seven teams to accomplish this feat won the Super Bowl.

Newton only needed 19 completions to gain 335 passing yards and 2 TDs against the Cardinals vaunted pass defense. He won’t put up those numbers again, but I don’t think he’ll blow it either. A big battle will be whether or not the Panthers o-line can find some holes for Jonathan Stewart, something they’ve done all season. Another big battle will be between Josh Norman and Demaryius Thomas. Thomas hasn’t been electric to say the least in the playoffs and Norman is likely to keep the Broncos #1 WR quiet. It’ll be up to Emmanuel Sanders and role players like Owen Daniels to help Manning keep the chains moving, as the run game isn’t going to be able to get going.

Super Bowl 50 point spread and over/under predictions

The last time these teams met was in 2012 and the Broncos won (36-14). Manning threw for 301 yards and 1 TD, while Newton threw for 241 yards, 2 TDs and 2 INTs. Denver had seven sacks in that game as well and they’ll try executing the same game plan in the 2016 NFL Super Bowl. However, that was a long time ago. Every week someone is stepping up along with Newton to keep the points coming. Last week Corey Brown and Greg Olsen both had over 100 receiving yards. Someone will step up again, the Panthers defense will frustrate the Broncos offense and Carolina will win Super Bowl 50 by a TD.

I don’t expect this game to be too high scoring. Both defenses are too good. I’m still worried about Newton’s weapons in the pass game against a secondary like Denver. I expect Newton to run out of the pocket a lot more often than usual. I have the score pegged around 24-17 for the Panthers.
