The Pittsburgh Steelers open up the 2012-13 regular season on the road Sunday night against the Denver Broncos. Fans are excited to see the return of Peyton Manning with the Broncos, and he has a big test in week 1 going up against the merciless Steelers defense.

Steelers vs. Broncos Betting Lines

Denver opened up as a -1.5 point favorite and continue to be favored in the same range. The only reason Denver is favored is because they’re playing at home, but the Broncos are an overvalued home team. The over/under opened at 44.5 and is up to 46.5 at the time of this writing.

Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers were 12-4 last season, but only 7-9 against the spread. Pittsburgh lost in the 1st round of the NFL playoffs last year in a brutal (if not flukey) ending against the Denver Broncos. Oh yeah, they want revenge.

Rashard Mendenhall is still injured and won’t be ready in week 1, but Dwyer looked good in preseason. Last year the Steelers were the 10th best passing offense (238.5 PYPG), but they relied on their defense due to not scoring enough (19.1 PPG – 21st).

Last year the Steelers went 5-3 on the road, but only 2-6 ATS. Being week 1, the Steelers will come out and be looking to pick-up a win. The key to winning in week 1 will to put constant pressure on Manning in his Broncos debut. The Steelers head into this game banged up a bit, but they’re an experienced, well coached team who will put up a fight.

Denver Broncos

Denver made the biggest move this off-season by signing Peyton Manning (in case you’ve been living under a rock). He didn’t look too sharp in the preseason, but he’s clearly an improvement that will help the Broncos become a better team. The Denver offense should be exciting this season, and Broncos fans will appreciate the return of the completed pass.

Last year the Broncos had the #1 rushing attack (155.1 RYPG), but were 2nd last (31st) in passing offense (143.3 PYPG). Peyton will be able to make this offense two dimensional, but in order to win games the defense is going to need to step up.

In this week 1 match-up the Broncos could have trouble stopping the Steelers. Denver should score some points, but the Steelers have a fast defense that will put pressure on Manning and cause him to make a mistake or two in this game.

Steelers vs. Broncos Point Spread

This is a really tough game to call, with a lot of ‘what-if’s’ in it. The Steelers were 5-3 on the road last season while the Broncos were only 1-6-1 ATS at home. Offensively, Peyton Manning completely changes the Broncos offense, and without seeing him in any games that matter since his injury, it’s hard to say what might happen. As handicappers we like to find an edge. In this one, we’re gambling a bit more than often.

I think it will take bettors a game or two to figure out the Broncos and until then I’d avoid the Steelers vs. Broncos point spread.

Broncos vs. Steelers Money Line

If you want to bet on this game, I think the Steelers money line is the best bet. The Pittsburgh money line is paying +105 at BetOnline, but even at those odds it’s hard to bet them on the road in week 1.

-125 on the Broncos money line looks like an unnecessary risk. We don’t know enough about the Broncos offense yet, and it could be a slow start for them. What’s the point in taking this bet in this situation?

Pittsburgh vs. Denver Over/Under

Until we know how Manning is going to work with the Broncos offense I don’t think it’s a good idea to bet the over/under. The current Steelers vs. Broncos over/under is 46.5, up two points since opening. If you really want to make this bet, I’d recommend the under, hoping Peyton Manning is a bit rusty, and both defenses are somewhat effective (most likely scenario).
