Steelers vs. Bengals Money Line Picks – 2016 NFL Playoffs

Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Cincinnati Bengals Preview

Kick-Off: Saturday, January 9th 2016 at 8:15pm ET
Venue: Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio
TV: CBS

IF you can only watch one of the AFC Wild Card round match-ups on Saturday, make sure it’s the night cap between the Pittsburgh Steelers (10-6) and Cincinnati Bengals (12-4). These two AFC North rivals know each other well, but surprisingly, they’ve only had the opportunity to play each other once in the NFL playoffs. Pittsburgh won 31-17, but the game was played in 2006.

The Steelers needed to beat the Browns and have the Jets to lose to the Bills in week 17 to earn a wild card spot. Both of those came true, as the Steelers won (28-12) and the Jets lost (22-17). It wasn’t all good news, though. DeAngelo Williams injured his ankle and we’re now awaiting MRI results on Monday to find out if he can start or if the Steelers will need to utilize Fitzgerald Toussaint at RB.

Bet on the 2016 NFL PlayoffsCincinnati locked up the AFC North in week 16 due to the Steelers losing, but the Bengals also lost to the Broncos (20-17) and it cost them a chance at being the #1 seed in the AFC. The Bengals ended up with the #3 seed, which means no first round bye. That is bad news, as Andy Dalton is still injured, although Dalton is hoping to have his cast removed on Monday when he visits a specialist.

Where’s the action? Early money is coming in on the Steelers to cover ATS and I expect the spread to hit a FG (-3). The over is being bet too and we’ve already seen a 1/2 point increase. With the injuries on offense, I’m not convinced there will be a lot of points.

Stats pack

These teams are very similar. They both can score points in a hurry, struggle against the pass and stop the run effectively. One area where the Bengals have an edge is in giveaways (Steelers 28 vs. Bengals 17). Ben Roethlisberger is throwing an interception on 3.4% of his pass attempts, which is his worst number since 2006 (4.9%). The turnover battle may end up deciding this match-up.

Season series

Steelers vs. Bengals Playoffs BettingCincinnati opened up the season series with a 16-10 win at Heinz Field in week 8. Big Ben struggled mightily, finishing the game with 1 TD and 3 INTs (23.3 QBR). However, the Steelers RBs (Williams & Bell) combined for 116 rushing yards on just 19 carries (6.1 Avg.). Andy Dalton and the Bengals offense played poorly too, but three FGs powered Cincy to a victory.

The second game featured a lot more scoring and the Steelers came out on top (33-20) to give them a season series split. Big Ben didn’t contribute any TDs, but Williams rushed for two, William Gay returned an INT for a TD and Chris Boswell went 4/4 on FGs in the game. AJ McCarron entered this game early when Dalton got injured – he threw 2 TDs and 2 INTs.

Steelers vs. Bengals predictions – AFC Wild Card Round

I love the value we’re getting on the Bengals money line and the odds will likely increase before kick-off, so I recommend holding off on betting. If news breaks that Dalton is going to play, jump on at that point, but the line shouldn’t get worse. Cincy is 6-2 at home this season, while the Steelers are 4-4 on the road with wins against the Rams, Chargers, Bengals and Browns.

All of the talk is how McCarron hasn’t thrown for 200+ passing yards in his three starts, but he did throw for 280 passing yards (22/32) against the Steelers in week 14. If he can avoid the turnovers, he’ll have a great day against the Steelers secondary. The Bengals just need A.J. Green and Tyler Eifert to step up and help the Alabama product by making some big plays.
