Seminoles Road Favorites Against Tigers in Death Valley

Florida State Seminoles vs. Clemson Tigers Preview

On Saturday night (8:00pm ET) the #5 Florida State Seminoles 5-0 (4-1 ATS) take on the #3 Clemson Tigers 6-0 (3-3 ATS). The game will be broadcasted on ABC live from Death Valley and features two of the top five college football teams in the country.

Clemson played like they were looking past Boston College last week and it almost cost them, but they won 24-14. FSU didn’t have to play last week and the week prior they demolished Maryland 63-0, so this team has had a lot of time to prepare for the Tigers.

Seminoles vs. Tigers Betting Lines

The reason the Seminoles are sitting as –3 point favorites is because they have had two weeks to prepare for Clemson. I don’t think Clemson should be underdogs in Death Valley and I’m grabbing the +3 now. The total is O/U 64 points and could go either way.

Which Undefeated ACC Team Will Emerge Victorious

Both of these teams rank amongst the leaders in most offensive and defensive statistics this season, which is why I think betting on the total doesn’t present much value. It’s hard to say whether these teams will explode on offense or grind it out on defense.

Clemson has already beaten a top five opponent at home this season in the opening week against Georgia (38-35). After playing very poorly last week on offense I think we’ll see a much better game from the impact players like Tajh Boyd and Sammy Watkins.

Tajh Boyd has led Clemson on offense and the Tigers are ranked 10th in passing yards (342 PYPG) and 18th in points scored (40.8 PPG) this season. The run game has been impressive as well and would be ranked higher than 65th (172.5 RYPG) if they ran the ball more.

Five players on the Tigers have rushed for 100+ yards this season with Roderick McDowell leading the way. There are also six WR’s on the Tigers that have 100+ receiving yards. Sammy Watkins leads the team with 36 receptions, 582 receiving yards and 4 TD’s.

FSU comes into this game with a more balanced offense. The Seminoles average 320.8 PYPG (18th) and 228.2 RYPG (17th). They can hurt teams through the air or on the ground and they convert most scoring chances. They average 53.6 PPG (3rd) right now.

These two defenses are excellent as well. Clemson only allows 16.2 PPG (10th) while the Seminoles allow 12 PPG (3rd). Looking at the schedule you can see that the Tigers have played tougher competition and it’ll be interesting to see how FSU’s defense plays.

Getting pressure on the opposing QB is going to be big in this game and Clemson definitely has the edge. Clemson has averaged 3.6 sacks per game (5th) compared to FSU who has averaged 1.8 sacks per game (76th). The edge in turnovers also goes to the Tigers.

Key Battles in Clemson vs. Florida State

The Seminoles have one of the best passing defenses in the nation (171.2 PYPG – 6th), but they haven’t played an offense that can test them like Clemson. Tajh Boyd played well last week, but he’ll need to play even better if he wants to win at home.

Clemson’s front seven has had some problems limiting the run game of other teams this season (172.8 RYPG – 73rd). FSU already has five players that have rushed for 100+ yards, but expect Devonta Freeman to lead the way this week like he has in week’s prior.

As a team the Seminoles have averaged 6 yards per rush on 190 carries. If FSU is able to run for 6+ yards per rush on average it could be a long game for the Tigers in Death Valley. If Clemson gets up big early and forces FSU to abandon the run they should win.

FSU vs. Clemson Picks

These two teams have played each other every year for some time now and the games are always exciting. Clemson has been the favorite the last four years, but they’ve only gone 2-2 SU. FSU came out on top last season with a 49-37 victory at home.

With so much on the line in this match-up including national championship and conference championship implications this game is going to be heavily bet this week. I’d jump on the Tigers at +3 now, as this point spread will likely drop to under 3 points this week.
