Seahawks Home Favorites Over the Saints on MNF

New Orleans Saints vs. Seattle Seahawks Preview

Stadium: CenturyLink Field in Seattle, Washington
Station: Watch Live on ESPN

The two best teams in the NFC will battle each other on Monday Night Football this week, as the Seattle Seahawks 10-1 (7-4 ATS) are hosting the New Orleans Saints 9-2 (6-4-1 ATS). These teams last met in the 2010-11 wild card round and the Seahawks won (41-36).

Seahawks vs. Saints Betting Lines

This week the point spread has been bouncing all over the place. The Saints opened up as –6 point favorites and bounced up to –7 quickly, however, the line dropped to as low as –4.5 points later in the week. It looks to have settled down now at –5 points.

Will Seattle Extend Their Winning Streak to Seven Games

Seattle has won their last six games, but during that streak the only team they beat with a winning record was Arizona. Seattle is also a perfect 5-0 at CenturyLink Field, but their only home win against a team with a winning record was in week 2 against the 49ers.

It’s safe to say that the Seahawks have had an easy schedule this season. That doesn’t mean you can take anything that they’ve done away from them, but it puts certain things into perspective. If they can beat the Saints it would definitely quiet some of the critics.

It took a little while, but the Seahawks offense looks explosive again. This season they average 27.8 PPG (2nd), but in their L3 games they have scored 33.7 PPG. The run game has been great (147.9 RYPG – 3rd), but the pass game has struggled (210.5 PYPG – 24th).

The Seahawks will find it difficult to pass on the Saints who only allow 198 PYPG (3rd), but Marshawn Lynch should be able to run the football on the Saints front seven, as they allow 111.9 RYPG (15th). The weather is expected to be bad, so look for Lynch to run a lot.

New Orleans will also have to try and run the football if it rains. The Saints only average 97.7 RYPG (23rd), but Seattle has had some problems stopping the run (112.9 RYPG – 16th). With Darren Sproles back this week the Saints will be able to run the football more.

Drew Brees may also find success on the Seahawks secondary because of injuries and suspensions. The Seahawks secondary is now depleted and the Saints have one of the best passing offenses in the NFL (317.3 PYPG – 2nd). If it rains it’ll be tough to throw though.

Seattle ranks 2nd at stopping the pass (180.4 PYPG), but with the injuries/suspensions they now lack depth. With all of the options at WR/TE I expect Brees to have a good game if the weather holds up, but I’d wait until closer to the game to verify the weather report.

Most Important Player on Each Team

Like I’ve mentioned, there is a high chance of rain on Sunday in Seattle. With that being said, Marshawn Lynch has to be able to pick up the tough yards in the trenches to keep the sticks moving. Lynch is averaging 4.4 yards per carry and can wear down any defense.

Brees has completed 68.3% of his pass attempts this season. He has thrown 28 TD’s and just 8 INT’s. With the Seahawks dealing with a weakened secondary Brees has to come out and sling the football early regardless of the weather to try and build up a lead.

Saints vs. Seahawks Predictions

I’ve already locked in the Saints at +5 points because I’m worried it’ll drop to +4.5 before Monday. Rob Ryan has the Saints defense playing at an elite level right now. If they can shutdown Lynch I don’t think Russell Wilson will be able to beat them on his own.

I haven’t locked in the under 47 points yet, but if there is rain on Monday in Seattle I’ll be betting the under. We have two of the top defenses in the league going up against each other. The Seahawks only allow 16.3 PPG (2nd) while the Saints allow 17.8 PPG (5th).
