New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints lost 40-32 in week 1 at home to the Redskins as a TD+ favorite. The defense was shredded for 459 yards, which ranked the worst in the NFL last week. The Saints defense allowed the Redskins to pass for 306 yards and rush for 153 yards.

After going down early, the Saints were forced to pass the football a lot more in the 2nd half. Drew Brees was 24/52 for 339 yards, 3 TD’s and 2 INT’s. Brees needs to find a new 3rd down WR (2/11 3rd down conversions) with Meachem gone as soon as possible.

New Orleans only rushed the ball 10 times in the game, gaining just 32 total yards by Ingram and Thomas. The running game will need to get going this week, as the Panthers gave up 130 rushing yards last week to the Bucs.

Carolina Panthers

The Carolina Panthers were small road favorites in week 1 against the Bucs, but they lost 16-10 due to their lack of offensive production. I thought the defense played good, but they were unable to stop Doug Martin who ran wild on the front seven most of the game.

Cam Newton’s stats from week 1 aren’t that bad (23/33 completions for 303 yards & 1 TD) until you look at the INT’s. Newton tossed up 2 INT’s against the Bucs and that kept the Panthers from scoring more points. Carolina should have more success this week.

The New Orleans defense allowed a ton of yards last week against a new-look Redskins offense that includes rookie QB Robert Griffin III. Newton was a bit shaky in week 1, but if he plays well and the defense has another solid performance this game could be close.

Saints/Panthers Point Spread

The Panthers run game was horrible in week 1, but it looks like Stewart may play this week in a limited role. If the Saints are able to force the Panthers to throw the ball, Newton is susceptible to making mistakes. At only -2.5 it’s hard not to like the Saints point spread.

Based on experience and expectations of the Saints, we’re going with the Saints point spread of -2.5 (-115) at BetOnline.com. I prefer to pay -115 than give up the extra 1/2 point we give up at Bovada.

If you prefer Carolina, you can get a field goal (-115) at Bovada.

Panthers vs. Saints Money Line

The latest Saints money line is -135 at BetOnline, and the Panthers money line is currently +115. Bovada hasn’t posted their Saints vs. Panthers money line yet.

I expect the Saints to win SU and you need to decide if the extra $.20 is worth betting the moneyline. Personally, I prefer the -2.5 point spread at -115.

New Orleans vs. Carolina Over/Under

The New Orleans/Carolina over/under has moved from 48 points to 51.5 – 52 points, so early value on the over is gone. I like the over, but if you missed out on o48 there isn’t much value betting into the line now. The Saints defense was horrendous in week 1 and I have a feeling this game could be a shootout.
