At the start of the season fans were anticipating this week 12 NFC South match-up between the New Orleans Saints 8-2 (6-3-1 ATS) and the Atlanta Falcons 2-8 (2-8 ATS). However, that’s no longer the case, as the Falcons are having one of their worse seasons ever.

We haven’t seen any line movement yet, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see the Saints closer to –10 by Thursday night. The total is also likely to increase this week. The Saints offense can put up a lot of points and the Falcons are playing terrible defense this year.

Which Team Will Win This NFC South Match-Up

The Saints are 2-0 in the division, which includes a 23-17 win in week 1 at home over the Falcons. Atlanta is 1-3 in the division after being dominated by the Buccaneers (41-28) last week. Nothing has gone right for Atlanta and they just want this season to end.

These two teams don’t like each other and I expect the Saints to do their best to dominate this game on the road. New Orleans has lost their L2 road games against the Patriots and Jets. They’ve given up 56 points in those two losses and have to improve on that.

Considering the injuries at WR that the Falcons have had to deal with this season, Matt Ryan hasn’t played that bad. Ryan has gone 267/404 (66.1%) for 2868 passing yards, 18 TD’s and 12 INT’s. Atlanta has the 6th ranked passing offense (274.4 PYPG) in the NFL.

The problem for Atlanta on offense has been that they have no run game (73.1 RYPG – 31st). They also struggle to put up points due to being so one-dimensional (21.4 PPG – 22nd). I expect the Falcons to struggle again this week against a resurgent Saints defense.

This season the Saints allow an average of 18.3 PPG (5th), 191.4 PYPG (4th) and 114 RYPG (17th). You can bet the Saints secondary is going to make life difficult for Ryan in this match-up and it wouldn’t surprise me if Ryan tosses 2+ interceptions this week.

Atlanta’s defense has given up over 30+ points in each of their L3 games. This season the Falcons defense has allowed an average of 29.2 PPG (29th), 132.7 RYPG (30th) and 249.2 PYPG (22nd). Drew Brees and the Saints offense should have no problem scoring 30+ pts.

The Saints offense is putting up 321.9 PYPG (2nd), 97.2 RYPG (23rd) and 28.8 PPG (2nd) on average this season. New Orleans hasn’t had a great run game, but the RB’s are active in the pass game. Pierre Thomas and Darren Sproles are 2nd and 3rd on the team in catches.

Breakout Performers in NO vs. ATL

Brees has thrown for over 300+ passing yards in his L4 games and Atlanta won’t be able to stop him. Brees threw for 357 yards in the week 1 match-up between these two teams. Sproles led the team in receptions that game and I expect him to have a big game also.

I feel that the Falcons RB’s need to step up and have a big game this week. When they’re on the field running the football it’ll keep the Saints offense on the sidelines, which is important. Ryan can’t have 40+ pass attempts if the Falcons want to win this game.

Saints vs. Falcons Predictions

You might want to buy the Saints down to –7 in order to have a chance at pushing if this game ends up being close, but I’d do it now before the spread increases any higher. New Orleans has been poor on the road, but Atlanta has been terrible all season long.

The Saints are still in a close fight with the streaking Panthers in the division and can’t afford losing to the Falcons. I don’t think they will take any chances in this game. Brees has enough offensive firepower to put the Falcons down and out of it early in the game.
