Rio 2016 Medal Predictions and Betting Odds

Rio 2016 Olympics LogoDates: Friday, August 5th – Sunday, August 21st 2016
Location: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The 2016 Olympics are days away and no one can predict how they’ll end up going. Brazil is in the midst of a major recession, crime is rampant and there are a myriad of health concerns, including the Zika virus. Despite the controversy, the Olympics begin with the opening ceremonies on Friday night.

How to bet on Rio 2016 online

If you don’t already have one, you’ll need to open a sportsbook account.

USA: Americans can bet on the 2016 Olympics at Bovada.lv and can receive up to a $250 bonus. Deposit with a credit card, Rapid Transfer or Bitcoin (BTC) and start betting within minutes.

What country will win the most gold medals at Rio 2016?

Odds to Win Most Gold Medals: USA (-550), China (+350), Great Britain (+2000), Russia (+5000), Germany (+6600), Australia (+6600), Japan (+7500), France (+7500) and South Korea (+8000).

It makes no sense to bet on USA (-550) to win the most gold medals at the current odds. While you may opt to avoid this market, I believe we’re getting value on China at nearly 4/1 odds.

Here are the top three countries in terms of gold medals won at the last four summer Olympics:

China dominates certain events, such as table tennis, badminton and taekwondo. They also perform well in several other events, but they struggle in the track and field events, which won’t change.

A lot can happen in Rio de Janeiro in two weeks and if you can’t resist this market, China offers the better value. If the Americans miss out on a few golds in the swimming pool or on the track, it’ll be real close.

Total (over/under) medal predictions for USA and Canada

Team USA:

Total Medals: Over 103.5 (-130) vs. Under 103.5 (+100)
Total Gold Medals: Over 42.5 (-105) vs. Under 42.5 (-125)

Team Canada:

Total Medals: Over 17.5 (-125) vs. Under 17.5 (-105)
Total Gold Medals: Over 2.5 (-140) vs. Under 2.5 (+110)

The above futures markets are available at Bovada and Bodog.

The Russian ban has made it a bit more difficult to calculate how many medals each country will win, but our projections have Team USA winning more than 105 total medals at Rio 2016.

Most projections have the Americans winning 104-106 medals, including the Goldman Sachs predictions, which were released this month. Goldman Sachs have USA winning 106 medals (45 Gold).

106 medals would be three more than the 2012 Olympics, but I feel even that’s conservative with the ban on Russia. USA may not win 45 golds, but they’ll be all over the podium the next couple weeks.

Canada is far from a powerhouse at the summer Olympics. Canadians are stronger in the winter Olympics, but there’s a sense of optimism that the athletes heading to Brazil will perform better than London.

Canada won 18 medals (1G, 5S & 12B) in 2012, 19 medals (3G, 9S & 7B) in 2008, 12 medals (3G, 6S & 3B) in 2004 and 14 medals (3G, 3S & 8B) in 2000.

The Canadians have gone over 17.5 total medals in the last two summer Olympics and I expect them to surpass that target again, although most projections have them winning between 15-17 medals.

I’d also bet on over 2.5 gold medals if the line wasn’t juiced so much. At -140 I’ll pass, but most projections have Canada winning 3 golds in Rio, despite disappointing with just one gold in London.
