Real Madrid v Manchester United – Champions League Last 16
When: 8:45pm CET. Wednesday, 13 February 2013
Venue: Estadio Santiago Bernabeu

The most highly anticipated Champions League fixture this week is the 1st leg between Real Madrid v Manchester United. This is going to be the first time that Cristiano Ronaldo will play against his old team since his transfer back in 2009.

Manchester United v Real Madrid 1X2 Odds

Real Madrid (1.66 @ Bet365.com) are decisive favourites in the 1st leg at Bernabeu. The Draw (4.10 @ Bet365) is priced well and if you expect the English side to steal a victory in Spain you can bet on Manchester United (5.00 @ PaddyPower.com) at huge odds.

Real Madrid v Manchester United Betting Analysis

Manchester United has a comfortable lead in the Premier League right now, as they’re 12 points ahead of Man City. In the group stage the Red Devils had an easy group that they ended up winning although they did drop their L2 group stage matches.

Real Madrid had a much tougher group to get through and they finished runner-up behind Dortmund. They had to get through Ajax and Man City in the group stage. In La Liga Real Madrid is currently in 3rd place behind Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

This 1st leg is going to be tough for the Red Devils to get any type of result against Real Madrid at Bernabeu. Real Madrid is 9-2-0 at home in La Liga play this season and they went 2-1-0 at home during the Champions League group stage.

Manchester United has been next to unstoppable this year in the English top flight, but they do have two away losses against weaker opposition. The Red Devils have lost to Everton (1-0) and Norwich City (1-0) this season.

During the group stage Man Utd also lost to Galatasaray (1-0) in an away match and to Cluj (1-0) at Old Trafford. I’m not one to look at trends that often, but a concerning trend is that Manchester United is just 2-8-10 when playing Spanish football teams.

Keys to Winning the 1st Leg for Both Squads

When you’re the away side in a 2-leg series it’s far too easy to sit back and pray for a draw. Manchester United has a lot of star firepower upfront that can net goals, but none more important than Robin Van Persie who already has 3 CL goals this year.

In the group stage Man City and Dortmund were both leading against Real Madrid at Bernabeu, but they blew the lead late in the game. If the Red Devils want to win or at least draw in this away match they need to pressure the Madrid back line early.

Real Madrid has only conceded 22 goals (2nd) in La Liga this term, but they were unable to keep a clean sheet in any group stage matches in the Champions League. Man Utd has averaged 2.38 goals in the EPL, but that drops to 2.15 GPG in away matches.

It has been in the news that Ronaldo isn’t 100% fit, but I expect him to lift his performance against his old squad. Real Madrid is a strong team upfront with the likes of Gonzalo Higuain, Karim Benzema, Angel Di Maria and Mesut Ozil.

However, those four players combined have scored 21 goals while Ronaldo has 21 goals himself in La Liga this year. It’s clear that the offence works through the superstar striker and when he isn’t scoring Real Madrid has some struggles offensively.

Real Madrid v Manchester United Predictions

Both teams should take a little while to adjust to each other in this game. A 1-1 draw at HT is what I picture happening and then in the 2H Real Madrid will net the winner. Man Utd I think will score an away goal, but it won’t be enough to win the 1st leg.

If you need a banker on your accumulator for the 1st leg of the Champions League I like both teams to score in this match. Both teams have scored in every Real Madrid group stage match and I don’t see that changing in the knockout stage.

I’m betting on Benzema to score the 1st goal at Paddy Power. Benzema had 3 goals during the group stage including the 1st goal in the 2nd match against Man City. If Manchester United wins the match Paddy Power will refund this bet if it loses.
