Rams vs. Lions Betting Lines

What: St. Louis Rams vs. Detroit Lions: NFL Week 1 Football
When: 1:00 pm EST. Sunday, September 9, 2012
Where: Ford Field

The Detroit Lions start their season off with a home game at Ford Field against the St. Louis Rams. Earning just two wins the entire 2011-12 season the Rams will want to get off to a better start this year. But, will they be able to do it on the road against the Lions?

St. Louis Rams vs. Detroit Lions Betting Lines: Point Spread, Moneyline & Over/Under

The Lions vs. Rams point spread opened at -9.5 points, but has been bet down to -7.5 points currently. Most books were watching out for teaser action when they opened the Lions at -9.5, but with the spread at -7.5 now the Lions will be a popular teaser leg. The latest over/under is 45.5 (opened at 47).

As you can see above, if you’re taking the Lions on the point spread, you’re better off at BetOnline, getting +100 instead of -110 at Bovada. If you’re taking the Rams to cover, go to Bovada instead. For those of you looking to bet a lot this season, it’s best to have accounts at both sportsbooks and shop for the best prices on each bet you place.

Finding money lines at Bovada is a bit like spotting Sasquatch. You may be able to catch a glimpse as he walks deeper into the forest, but he’ll come and go too fast to capture photo evidence. However, value can often be found at Bovada, and they might have the best NFL live betting in the industry (fun stuff for action junkies).

St. Louis Rams

The St. Louis Rams went 2-14 last season and weren’t much better against the spread (3-12-1 ATS), ranking worst in the NFL. With all this said, there is some hope that the youngsters in St. Louis can put up competitive numbers with Jeff Fisher now coaching the team.

Aside from RB Steven Jackson, this is a young, inexperienced team. Rookie RB Isaiah Pead and rookie WR Brian Quick were both drafted this year, and expected to find playing time immediately.

Last season the Rams averaged 11.4 PPG (32nd) on offense and allowed 23.9 PPG (26th) on defense. The offense should be better with another year under their belt, but the defense will still be one of the worst in the NFL.

2012 St. Louis Rams Preview Video

I looked and looked, there’s nothing but junk videos out there for this Rams vs. Lions game. This is the only video I could find with anything informative whatsoever. Seriously, who cares what cracklady or drunken shirtless guy thinks of this game? No, your manboobs are not going to make you Perez Hilton of the NFL.

Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions went 10-6 and made the playoffs last season, but their defense was exposed against the Saints in the wild card round. In the regular season the Lions were only 7-8-1 against the spread, but they did go over 10 out of 16 games (7-1 over on the road).

The Lions didn’t make too many changes to their team although they did sign CB Jacob Lacey and DB Sean Jones. This might help some of the defensive problems on the Lions, which will be needed if they want to become a Superbowl contender.

If healthy, the Lions offense is one of the best in the NFL. The Lions averaged 283.2 PYPG (4th) and 27.9 PPG (4th) on offense last season and those numbers could be exceeded if Calvin Johnson and Matthew Stafford have big seasons in 2012-13.

Rams vs. Lions Betting Picks

Below are our free picks for the Rams vs. Lions point spread, money line and over/under in week 1 of the 2012 NFL season. For US visitors who want to bet on NFL games this year, we recommend getting an account at BetOnline.com. They don’t offer as many props or live bets as some other sportsbooks, but they post early spreads, money lines and o/u odds. We’re always looking for value, and early lines are often the key. They welcome American customers, along with Visa and other deposit options. Handicappers can also bet on an iPhone or other internet-enabled mobile phones & tablets.

Rams vs. Lions Point Spread

The Rams won’t suddenly become a competitor to begin this season, and I don’t think they’ll cover this point spread on the road. I’m picking the Lions to win by 10, so I’m taking them on the point spread of -7.5 (+100) at BetOnline.com.

Money Line

As such a big favorite I’m not seeing any betting value on the Lions money line. The Rams moneyline (+300) pays well, but I don’t think they can win this game on the road in week 1. I’d avoid the current Detroit vs. St. Louis money line due to lack of value.

Lions vs. Rams Over/Under Odds

The Detroit Lions went over 10 times last season, but only 3X’s at home. The St. Louis Rams went under 6 times on the road last season. Both of these numbers tell us to go under, but the over/under has dropped to 45.5 in the last few days (from 47). Either handicappers are betting the same ideas we are, or the over/under just opened way too high. For now (Thursday at 3:30am EST), we’re going to hold off to wait and see where the line goes. I’m hoping to see it bounce back to the 46 to 46.5 range, and we’ll take the under if it does.
