It’s a crucial game to close out Week 15 in the NFL as the Washington Redskins look to bolster their playoff chances at home at the expense of the reigning conference champion Carolina Panthers on Monday night.

The Redskins (7-5-1) cannot catch the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC East, which leaves them currently jockeying with the New York Giants, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers for the two wild-card spots. Washington enters play this week in the middle of that five-team pack, one-half game behind Tampa Bay for the last postseason spot and one-half game ahead of NFC North foes Detroit and Green Bay. The Redskins hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Packers but not the Lions.

Washington capped a three-game road swing with a much-needed 27-22 win at divisional rival Philadelphia last weekend. Chris Thompson’s 25-yard run with 1:53 to play provided the winning points in a back-and-forth second half in which the Redskins overcame 13-7 halftime deficit before squandering a 21-13 advantage earlier in the fourth quarter.

Kirk Cousins threw a pair of third-quarter touchdowns and finished with 234 yards for Washington, which plays at Chicago on Christmas Eve on a short turnaround from this contest before closing its season at home versus the Giants on New Year’s Day.

Carolina (5-8-0), meanwhile, is teetering on the edge of elimination and can only return to the postseason by winning the NFC South. That, however, would take the Panthers winning their final three games and both the Buccaneers and Atlanta Falcons losing their final three to create a three-way tie atop the division.

The Panthers kept their playoff hopes alive by defeating San Diego 28-16 last week. Carolina forced a season-high five turnovers and scored the first 23 points of the game to cruise to victory. Cam Newton completed just 10 of 27 passes but one of them was a scoring toss to Devin Funchess in that pivotal first half.

Home is where the points are for the Redskins

After opening the season with losses to Pittsburgh and Dallas at FedEx Field, Washington has ripped off four straight wins three by averaging 31.5 points and 424.3 yards. Cousins has thrown for 1,083 yards and 10 TDs in those victories, and with the Redskins playing their first home game since beating the Packers 42-24 on Nov. 20, expect them to come out fired up and looking to keep that trend going.

Pierre Garcon has been Cousins’ primary target in those wins, totaling 22 receptions for 313 yards. His play has opened the middle of the field for slot receiver Jamison Crowder (12 catches for 212 yards and 3 TDs), while veteran speedster DeSean Jackson has contributed 12 receptions for 151 yards and a score.

Primetime woes for the Panthers

The Panthers are hoping their third road game in prime time this season will have a different outcome than the first two. They opened the season losing at Denver in a rematch of Super Bowl 50 and were thrashed 40-7 two weeks ago at Seattle. Newton has been pedestrian at best in those contests, throwing for just 376 yards while completing less than 50 percent of his passes.

Carolina hasn’t been much better defensively on the road, where it is 1-5 while giving up an average of 32.5 points. Opposing quarterbacks have compiled a 101.3 passer rating with 2,072 yards and 13 touchdowns in those games, meaning Cousins and the Redskins could have an opportunity to avenge last season’s 44-16 beatdown at Carolina in which Newton threw for 246 yards and a career high-tying five touchdowns.

Panthers at Redskins Week 15 Predictions

Bet on over 51 points (-110) at Bovada

Despite a hefty total of 51 points at -110 set by the Bovada Sportsbook for this game, the recommendation here is to bet the OVER. While it might not be an old-fashioned shootout, Washington’s defense has done little to show itself capable of slowing anyone, even a Carolina team that tends to struggle on the road. The Redskins have given up at least 20 points in all six of their home games, and Newton has thrown for 703 yards and 7 TDs without an interception en route to a 3-0 record against them over his career.
