New Mexico vs. Texas Point Spread & Money Line

What: New Mexico Lobos vs #17 Texas Longhorns NCAA Football
When: 8:00 pm EST. Saturday. September 8, 2012
Where: Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. Austin, TX

The #17 Texas Longhorns (1-0, 0-1 ATS) are looking for a more decisive kind of winning this week when they welcome the unfortunate New Mexico Lobos (1-0). Critics have already started shouting, “over-rated!” to a defense that allowed the Wyoming Cowboys to actually score a couple touchdowns.

They’ve got a real opportunity to silence those folks on Saturday and will likely make New Mexico the focus of their frustration. For New Mexico nothing comes easy, and their big 66-21 win over the Southern University Jaguars may be as good as it gets this year.

Texas Longhorns Ready for a Wake Up Call

The Longhorns opened their season with a 37-17 win over Wyoming that just wasn’t good enough for the national polls. They dropped from #15 to #17, despite an impressive 280 yard rushing effort.

Quarterback David Ash (20-27, 156 yds, 1 TD) probably had sore hands from handing off the ball, but was happy to chalk up his first win. He made great use of running backs Joe Bergeron and Malcom Brown, who both put up over 100 yards apiece. Bergeron finished the day with two TDs and Brown with one.

Defensively, the Longhorns did struggle early on, allowing the Cowboys to put up nine points and 178 yards in the first quarter. We’re certainly willing to look past a sloppy 1st quarter in the first game of the season. Considering that Wyoming only put up another 169 yards the whole game, they actually played very well.

New Mexico Lobos Start Strong

As we’ve said, last week may have been the high point of the season for the long suffering Lobos. Last season they went 1-11 (6-6 ATS) and probably won’t do too much better this year. Last week gave some of the Lobos backup players a rare opportunity to see playing time in a game they were actually winning. That may not be a good thing, as the starters can use all the practice they can get.

One high point for New Mexico was a standout performance by freshman QB, and New Mexico native, Cole Gautsche who ran for two TDs. He’s a bright spot in a program that’s really suffered over the years.

On the other side of the ball, the New Mexico defense looked solid, forcing 4 turnovers and holding the Jaguars to just 78 yards rushing. We don’t expect that kind of performance in Austin, but they may earn a bit of respect from the Longhorns.

New Mexico vs. Texas Point Spread Pick

The New Mexico vs. Texas point spread is a tough one to pick because the Lobos are more than capable of losing by 38 – or even 48 points to a ranked team. In fact, they’ve lost their last four road openers by 50 or more. Still, Texas is also capable of sputtering through a game like this without losing, but not dominating. Lines this big are pretty scary, but you came here for a pick so we won’t let you down.

We’re going to take Texas -38 (-110) at BetOnline.com, and hope the players are pissed off about their drop in the rankings last week. Truthfully, unless they beat this spread, they won’t be doing their #17 rankings any good either.

Money Line Bets

None of the major books are offering New Mexico vs. Texas money line bets at the time this article is being written. If/when they do, there won’t be much value here anyway, unless you’re looking to add them to a money line parlay.

Over/Under Pick

The current Texas vs. New Mexico over/under is 52 (-110) on either side at most books. The Texas Longhorns should be a lot sharper than they were last week, and should make a lot of visits to the end zone. Combine that with a Lobos offense that’s slightly better than they were last year, and that number should be easy to make. We’re happily taking the over of 52 (-110) at BetOnline.
