Netherlands v Argentina World Cup Semi-Final Betting Preview

Start Time: Wednesday, July 9th 2014 at 4:00pm ET
Stadium: Arena Corinthians in Sao Paulo, Brazil
Station: Live on CBC Sports & ESPN

The second semi-final match in the 2014 World Cup features Netherlands v Argentina. The Dutch have won all five of their matches, but they had a scare put into them in the QF against Costa Rica. The match was 0-0 after ET, but the Dutch won 4-3 on penalty kicks.

Netherlands looked clinical in the shootout against CR. Argentina has had their own offensive problems. They beat Belgium (1-0) on an early goal by Gonzalo Higuain in the QF’s while they needed a late goal in ET to advance past the Swiss (1-0) prior to that.

I feel the betting lines in Netherlands v Argentina are where I’d expect them to be. With two struggling offenses the under is juiced up, which could present some value on the over markets. Argentina is favored due to the “home field” advantage they have in SA.

Netherlands @ Argentina H2H Overview

The Dutch are 4-2-2 against Argentina with the last match ending in a 0-0 draw at the 2006 World Cup. The last three matches have gone under the total as well. Netherlands last lost to Argentina way back in 1978. They’ve since gone 2-2-0 in four matches.

Argentina’s Di Maria Ruled Out of SF

Team doctors have already ruled Angel Di Maria out, but Sergio Aguero is fit to play after missing two matches. Higuain will have to perform like he did in the QF and Ezequiel Lavezzi will need to work hard down the wings to open up space for Lionel Messi.

The Dutch will likely play a 5-2-3 formation, which makes them strong on the back line. It also allows Daley Blind and Dirk Kuyt to jump up into the play on counterattacks. They both open up space for the midfielders and forwards in the attacking zone.

Argentina has only conceded three goals in the tournament, but the best teams they’ve played are Belgium and Switzerland. This is going to be their toughest test and I expect the back line to struggle against Robin Van Persie, Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder.

Netherlands had a fair amount of chances against CR, but they hit multiple posts and were unable to convert. When Robben touches the football he’s magical near the box and my money is on him to either score a goal or set-up a goal in the semi-final.

This is going to be an extremely close match. Argentina has the benefit of playing in South America against a European team, but for them to win they’re going to need their forwards to play together as a unit, which will be tough with Di Maria ruled out.

Netherlands v Argentina Predictions

This match may need extra time and potentially penalty kicks, but I’m betting on the Dutch to qualify at +120 odds. I’m losing value by not betting on the 1X2 market, but in what I believe will be a close match I’d rather bet on the team I like to simply advance.

Sneijder had several chances to score against CR and he was simply unlucky not to score in the match. Sneijder has one goal in the tournament, which came against Mexico. He has a powerful kick and if he continues to get set-up he’s going to put one away.

I’m willing to risk the juice on this bet because at the very least I expect this bet to push. The Dutch could have scored 2-3 goals on CR with a bit of luck. Prior to that the Dutch scored 12 goals in four matches, so they haven’t struggled to score all tournament.

Argentina’s defense hasn’t been tested by anything close to what they’ll see on Wednesday. Robben will outclass them all match to open up opportunities in the box. Argentina is also a threat to score at anytime with Messi on the field.
