#10 Indiana Hoosiers vs. #7 Wichita State Shockers – 2015 March Madness preview

Hoosiers vs. Shockers March Madness BettingTip-Off: Friday, March 20th 2015 at 2:45pm ET
Location: CenturyLink Arena in Omaha, Nebraska
TV: CBS

The #7 Wichita State Shockers 28-4 (17-1 MVC) – third on the mid-major top 25 rankings — play the Indiana Hoosiers 20-13 (9-9 Big Ten) in the second round of the NCAA basketball tournament on Friday afternoon in Omaha, NE.

Indiana are coming into the tourney with little confidence. The Hoosiers finished the regular season on a 5-8 run and they were promptly eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten conference tournament against Maryland (75-69).

Wichita State have been one of the best mid-major programs in recent years, but this year’s team isn’t that good. The Shockers were just knocked out of the MVC tournament in the quarterfinals after being upset by Illinois State.

The Shockers haven’t played many top tier teams either. Wichita State are 1-2 against ranked opponents, which includes a 1-1 record against Northern Iowa and a loss against the Utes early in the season.

The public is split on which team will cover the point spread. 58% of the action has been on Wichita State to cover –5.5 points. In the over/under market, 80% of the action has been on the over, which is surprising, as the Shockers are great defensively.

Hoosiers offense vs. Shockers defense

Indiana averages 77.5 PPG (18th), 12.0 ORPG (73rd) and 14.0 APG (76th) on offense. The Hoosiers rank 48th in FG% (46.6%) and 8th in 3-point shooting percentage (40.3%). Indiana not only shoots well from deep, but they rank 8th in made 3-pointers (308).

This team doesn’t rely on just one shooter either. In fact, four players on Indiana have made over 50 3-pointers. James Blackmon Jr (16.1 PPG) and Yogi Ferrell (15.8 PPG) are the leading scorers on Indiana, and both have made 75+ shots from beyond the arc.

Wichita State don’t have the offense to keep up with the Hoosiers unless the Shockers defense plays great. The Shockers rank 7th in the country in points allowed (55.8 PPG) and they play at one of the slowest paces in college hoops as well.

The Shockers lack size, but they average 7.0 SPG (78th) and play pesky full court defense. Only three players on Wichita State are 6’8’’ or taller and Bush Wamukota is the only player out of the three to see any significant playing time lately.

Will the Shockers defensive pressure work on Indiana or will the Hoosiers rain down 3’s all afternoon?

On paper, the Shockers aren’t a great offensive team. Wichita State’s offense averages 69.7 PPG (108th), 11.9 ORPG (81st) and 13.9 APG (81st). They shoot 44.6% from the field (102nd) and 36.2% from beyond the arc (86th).

The Shockers are actually fairly efficient offensively and the reason the numbers are low is because they play at such a slow pace.

Wichita State should have no problem scoring points on Indiana, as the Hoosiers are terrible defensively. Indiana ranks 298th in points allowed (71.4 PPG), 146th in defensive rebounding (24.0 DRPG), 207th in blocks (3.2 BPG) and 310th in steals (5.1 SPG).

Ron Baker (15.0 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 2.5 APG, 1.3 SPG and 0.8 BPG) is the leader on the Shockers, but he’ll also need as much help as he can get from players like Fred VanVleet (12.7 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 5.3 APG and 1.8 SPG).

VanVleet does everything well, as he shoots 42.9% from the field, 36.9% from deep and 79.1% from the FT line.

This really is a tough game to predict. The Hoosiers have lost four of five and barely made it through conference play, but they had the 23rd toughest SOS. The Shockers pass the eye test, although ranking 120th in SOS leaves a lot to be desired.

Indiana vs. Wichita State ATS prediction

Indiana have been losing a lot lately, but the point spread is too big for the Shockers to cover ATS. Many of the Hoosiers losses have been close, including a 2-point loss against Maryland, 4-point loss against Purdue and 2-point loss against Michigan State.

Playing against Gregg Marshall’s squad is never an easy task because you know the Shockers are going to play with high intensity for the entire 40 minutes. Like I’ve said before though – I give offensive powerhouses an edge over defensive-minded teams.

I’m also split on this game in my brackets. I have both the Shockers and Hoosiers advancing in some of my brackets.

This match-up is going to come down to the wire and it wouldn’t surprise me if the game is won on a buzzer-beater.

The total seems a bit high, but I won’t be betting on the over/under market. Indiana will look to play this game at a high pace and I expect them to attempt a lot of 3-point shots. Points may be scored in a hurry, so I recommend sticking to the point spread only.
