Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Atlanta Hawks – NBA Eastern Conference Finals – Game 2

When: Friday, April 22nd 2015 at 8:30pm ET
Where: Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia
Watch: TNT

THE Cleveland Cavaliers won the first game in the series on Wednesday night against the Atlanta Hawks (97-89) and now the Hawks are up against the wall in game 2 on Friday night at the Philips Arena.

Everyone is talking about J.R. Smith and for good reason, as he had 28 points on 8 of 12 shooting from beyond the arc. However, it should be noted that the Hawks are going to need to play much better in game 2, or else the series may slip away quickly.

Smith isn’t likely to drop 28 points again, but his performance wasn’t the only reason the Hawks lost.

Atlanta had less rebounds (49 vs. 37) and less assists (20 vs. 19) than the Cavaliers. Those are two areas where the Hawks need to dominate if they expect to advance to the NBA Finals. The series will be back on the court on Friday night at the Philips Arena.

Cavaliers vs. Hawks point spread, money line and point total

The betting lines have just opened up and the Cavs are a small -1 point favorite. I can’t believe the Hawks are almost paying even money to win game 2. If the Hawks don’t win game 2, the series is over, so I’ll be jumping all over the Hawks money line.

Based on what I seen in game 1, the over/under has opened too high and I’m betting on the under now, before the total drops. I could see the total decreasing a point or two before tip-off.

Starting line-ups

Cleveland Cavaliers:

Atlanta Hawks:

Kyrie Irving and Tristan Thompson were both probable heading into the opener due to injuries, but both played, albeit Irving only played 27 minutes. Shumpert had 4 points and 7 rebounds in 34 minutes – it’ll interesting if he starts or Smith starts at SG.

Will the Hawks get back into the series with a win in game 2?

A number of things went wrong for the Hawks in the opener.

One of the biggest problems was the Hawks 3-point shooting, as they went 4 of 23 (17.4%). Kyle Korver went 2 of 4 from deep, but he only finished with 9 points. Atlanta needs more out of the sharpshooter, especially from beyond the arc.

The Cavs were only 10 of 26 (38.5%) on 3-pointers and even that was only because Smith was real hot.

DeMarre Carroll struggled and ended the game with 5 points on 2 on 7 shooting from the field. Carroll led the Hawks coming into the game in playoff scoring. I knew his numbers would drop, as he’s covering Lebron James, but 5 points is unacceptable.

Paul Millsap (13 points on 3 of 11 shooting) and Dennis Schroder (6 points on 2 of 10 shooting) both struggled with their shot.

It wasn’t all bad for the Hawks.

Jeff Teague led the team with 27 points on 11 of 24 shooting from the field, but he was just 1 of 6 on 3-pointers. Kent Bazemore pitched in 10 points and 4 rebounds in 16 minutes, while Al Horford finished with 16 points and 7 rebounds.

Apart from inconsistent performances out of Smith – the Cavs have a real bad bench. Smith was the only bench player to score, as James Jones and Matthew Dellavedova combined to go 0 of 9 on FGA (0 of 7 from beyond the arc).

Lebron James still wasn’t great from the field (12 of 26), but he finished with 31 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. It’s clear James is going to have to lead the Cavaliers past the Hawks, as the other starters aren’t getting too many offensive touches.

Timofey Mozgov (10 points and 11 rebounds) and Thompson (14 points and 10 rebounds) both finished with a double-double.

The Hawks have the talent to win, but they need to improve in some areas. As I already mentioned, they have to win the battle on the glass. More importantly, 19 assists isn’t going to cut it for a team that leads the league in assists rate.

Cavaliers vs. Hawks best bets

The Hawks are -102 (1.98) at the Bovada Sportsbook. Get a $250 free bet upon joining Bovada.lv if you live in the USA.

Alternatively, CrownBet.com.au is available for bettors in most other countries and they have the Hawks at 1.90 (-111) to win SU, however, they also have alternate point spreads and your best bet is to take the Hawks -1.5 at 2.06 (+106).

Atlanta can’t afford to lose – they have to even up the series before heading to Cleveland for two games.

Teague, Millsap, Horford and Carroll all have to step up with big games. I’ve given up on Korver. Not only is he not sinking the 3-ball enough, but his defense is terrible, which was evident again in Wednesday’s game.

I love the under in this game. It wasn’t like these two teams shot that bad in game 1. The Cavaliers shot 44% (37 of 84) and the Hawks shot 44.2% (34 of 77) from the field. The game was relatively slow paced and we can expect more of the same.

The Cavs are slowing down the pace and trying to keep every game more manageable due to the injuries they have.
