NBA Opening Night on TNT Predictions & Previews

The 2013-14 NBA regular season starts tomorrow night (Tuesday, October 29th 2013) with three games on the schedule. TNT will be broadcasting a doubleheader. The Miami Heat hosts the Chicago Bulls and the Lakers host the Clippers. Both games should be exciting, as they feature four solid teams.

Bulls vs. Heat Betting Lines

Miami opened up as a –5 point favorite, but the spread had dropped to –4.5 points with the action spread out evenly between both teams at the betting window. We haven’t seen any live movement on the over/under, which is sitting at O/U 187.5 points.

Can Derrick Rose Lead Chicago to a Win Over Miami

Derrick Rose is back from his lengthy ACL injury and he’ll give the Bulls a jump on the offensive side of the court. Rose has averaged 27.4 MPG, 20.17 PPG, 5 APG and 3.29 RPG in seven preseason games and he has been getting better with each game under his belt.

Now that the regular season is starting I’m very interested to see how Rose will look against hungry defenses. Miami had one of the best defenses in the league last year. The Heat allowed 94.1 PPG (4th) and they ranked #7 in defensive efficiency (1.002) last season.

Chicago scored the least amount of points (93 PPG), but with Rose back that’s going to change quickly. Last season the offense could have been even worse if the Bulls didn’t average 12.4 ORPG (6th). The Bulls were one of the best rebounding teams (51.6 RPG – 7th).

Miami actually struggled on the boards last year and they need to improve in that category (29.9 DRPG – 23rd). Lebron James (8.4), Chris Bosh (7.3) and Dwayne Wade (4.6) were the three leaders in rebounds last season. The other forwards need to pick it up.

Udonis Haslem, Chris Andersen, Joel Anthony and Greg Oden have to focus on picking up rebounds this season while the other big three on the Heat worry about scoring the majority of the points. I expect both defenses in this game to play well.

Joakim Noah is one of the best defensive players in the NBA and he hates the Heat. He says he’s “100%” coming into the game on Tuesday night and he’ll be hungry to win. I feel the best bet in this game is to bet on the under 187.5 points rather than the spread.

Clippers vs. Lakers Betting Lines

The Clippers have dominated this series recently, which is the opposite of what used to happen in the past. The Clippers opened up as an 8-point favorite and there has been no line movement. The game total has moved a lot though (From O/U 197 to O/U 198.5).

Will Doc Rivers Put the Clippers Over the Hump

Doc Rivers is now the head coach of the Clippers and he’ll bring this team more confidence on the court. I think the Clippers will miss Eric Bledsoe, but Darren Collison is a great back-up PG behind Chris Paul and I don’t think the Clips will suffer much at the position.

Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan are going to be the two focal points in the paint, but the team now has much more depth including Byron Mullens and Jared Dudley. J.J Redick and Mullens can both shoot the 3-ball well and that’ll help open up space in the paint.

I expect the Lakers to struggle again this season, as the team is “old” compared to some of the younger teams. Kobe Bryant won’t be ready to start the season on Tuesday night. Some good news for the Lakers is that Steve Nash is healthy and ready to start the year.

Nash may have his minutes lowered this season to keep him fresh/healthy. Steve Blake and Jordan Farmar should see extra playing time at PG/SG. With Bryant still out it’s likely that Blake will get the start against the Clippers at SG, which isn’t and ideal situation.

Pressure will be on the big forwards for the Lakers. Pau Gasol needs to lead the team early without Bryant and a lot is expected from Chris Kaman, Nick Young and Wesley Johnson. This is a fierce rivalry, but on paper the Clippers should run away with this game.

The Lakers were one of the highest scoring teams last season (101.4 PPG – 6th), but they struggled on the defensive end (101.2 PPG – 24th). The Clippers were close to the Lakers in scoring (100.6 PPG – 9th) and played much better defensively (95 PPG – 6th).

There are going to be mismatches all over the court on Tuesday. Griffin and Jordan will have their way on both sides of the court and Nash is going to have trouble keeping up with Chris Paul. I thought this spread could be double digits, but at –8 I like the Clips a lot.
