NBA: Clippers at Rockets gambling lines

Bet on the Rockets vs Clippers - Feb 25th 2015When: Wednesday, February 25th 2015 at 8:00pm ET
Where: Toyota Center in Houston, Texas
Watch: ESPN

WHAT’S not to like about a Western conference tilt between the Los Angeles Clippers 37-20 (24-33 ATS) and Houston Rockets 38-18 (32-24 ATS) on ESPN? The only downside is that Dwight Howard and Blake Griffin are both going to miss the game due to injury.

These teams play each other a lot and the Clippers have dominated the H2H series lately. The Clips have won six games in a row against Houston, including two wins this season. With Griffin ruled out – James Harden and the Rockets will look to exact revenge.

LAC vs. HOU point spread and over/under odds

Two of the better big men in the NBA are unable to suit up, but we still have Harden and Chris Paul to excite us. Since this game is on ESPN it’s a perfect match-up to try out live betting if you haven’t.

The betting lines for this game will be released tonight at some point and I’ll update the article at that time.

Houston is going to be favored at home, but by how much? I don’t expect the point spread to open that high and my plan is to jump on the Rockets quickly. Houston is 20-8 at the Toyota Center, while the Clippers are only 14-12 when playing on the road.

Starting line-ups

Clippers vs. Rockets betting preview

You would think the Clippers would be struggling without Griffin in the line-up. However, that’s not the case. The Clippers have gone 4-2 since the Griffin injury. That includes a 110-95 win over the Rockets earlier this month at the Staples Center in LA.

Harden was terrible in the recent loss to the Clippers. He shot 3-12 from the field (0-7 from deep). Harden finished the game with 9 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 turnovers. On the season, Harden is averaging 27.3 PPG, 5.8 RPG, 6.8 APG and 4.0 TPG.

It’s a shame that Harden struggled in that game, as the bench played great.

Josh Smith scored 21 points and Corey Brewer led the team with 22 points. If Houston gets similar production from the bench they should have no problem winning. Houston also needs Harden to play more defense because he’s getting killed right now.

Redick and Jamal Crawford combined to score 40 points against Houston earlier this month. Paul was shutdown by Beverley and will be again in this match-up. Paul struggles against PG’s that can defend him, which we just witnessed when the Grizzlies beat LAC.

These teams are similar to each other in a lot of ways. The Clippers are scoring 106.9 PPG (2nd), while the Clippers score 103.2 PPG (6th). Houston are better at defending, as they allow 99.6 PPG (17th) compared to the Clippers who are giving up 100.7 PPG (22nd).

Houston has an edge on the glass, as they average 43.8 RPG (12th), while the Clippers average 41.8 RPG (24th). Jordan has stepped up his play with Griffin out. Jordan has averaged 17.8 RPG in the last six games and he’s now averaging 13.9 RPG on the season.

I expect a big factor in this match-up to be the benches. Crawford is playing great in an increased role right now, but no one else has been consistently impressive. The Rockets bench is deep and even deeper now that Terrance Jones is healthy again.

Jones has been back for three games and he’s averaging 11.7 PPG, 11.0 RPG and 2.7 BPG in 28.7 MPG off the bench. Brewer (12.0 PPG) and Smith (11.9 PPG) are providing a spark as well. As it stands now, the Rockets have been getting better bench production.

Rockets vs. Clippers picks

Unless the point spread opens up way too high, I’ll be betting on the Rockets to cover the point spread at home. They haven’t been able to beat the Clippers in six straight games, but everything is lining up perfectly for the Rockets this time around.

Houston is playing some of the best basketball they have all season. The team has so many players that can contribute, plus Harden is capable of scoring 40-50 points any time he steps on the floor. This team is a contender to win the Western conference.

The over/under should be high, as both teams love to run the basketball up the court and find a quick shot. I don’t have an interest in betting on the total. I expect a lot of points, but the sportsbooks will open the line up at well north of 200 points.
