Michigan vs Notre Dame Betting Lines

What: #18 Michigan Wolverines vs #11 Notre Dame Fighting Irish NCAA Football
When: 7:30 pm EST. Saturday. September 22, 2012
Where: Notre Dame Stadium. Notre Dame, Indiana

Notre Dame (3-0, 2-1 ATS) shocked college football handicappers last week by upsetting the Michigan State Spartans 20-3. This week they’re at home facing off against the #18 Michigan Wolverines (2-1, 1-2 ATS) in a game that could propel them back into the spotlight in a big way.

While the Fighting Irish have momentum on their side, early bettors have driven them from -3.5 favorites up to -5 or even -6. That tells you that the betting public is packed with rabid Wolverine fans. It’s a tough game to handicap, but it’s certain to be a college football classic for fans, and bettors who are willing to do some research.

Notre Dame has been good to sports bettors this season, but success tends to draw the betting public and that’s not good. Any time two high profile teams with big national fan bases meet up, value is harder to find, and we have to do a better job of dissecting the game. That means old fashioned research is essential when picking a point spread or over/under winner.

Michigan Wolverines

The Michigan Wolverines had a huge challenge in week one when they took on the Alabama Crimson Tide, but haven’t seen anybody of that caliber since. After surviving a 31-25 scare against Air Force (1-1, 1-1 ATS) they coasted to a 63-13 win against lowly UMass (0-3, 0-3 ATS). The big question for bettors is, will that be good enough preparation for a Fighting Irish squad that’s really on a roll?

There’s no question that Michigan has the weapons it takes to knock off the Irish. QB Denard Robinson is 41-75 for 699 yards, 6 TD’s and 4 INT’s on the year. He should be confident and well-rested after completing 16-24 for 291 yards before being pulled in third quarter against UMass.

One player to watch is TB Fitzgerald Toussaint, who missed the season opener due to off-the-field struggles. He completely under-performed against Air Force, putting up just seven yards, but returned for a nice day against UMass. A big performance against Notre Dame could definitely turn this game in Michigan’s favor.

Michigan is capable of winning this game outright, but they’ll need to play at a level we haven’t seen from them this season.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are in the business of showing the college football world that they’re back in contention, and a win against Michigan will seal the deal. But whenever a team is in this position, there’s always the danger of a letdown.

The Irish are steadily improving and their win over the Spartans was a major milestone for the program. Notre Dame had a balanced offensive effort with 178 yards passing and 122 rushing. On the other side of the ball they absolutely dominated, holding MSU to just 50 yards on the ground.

If their defense can stifle the Wolverines the way they did the Spartans, Notre Dame should have no problem covering five points.

Michigan vs Notre Dame Point Spread

The public will be all over this game, so keep a close eye on line movement as the week progresses. For the sake of providing free picks for our readers, our picks are based on betting lines at the time this article is being written. For the latest betting lines, visit BetOnline.com.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are -5 point favorites versus Michigan, and that sounds about right. We’re expecting Michigan to benefit from Spartans film, and keep things fairly tight. Still, Notre Dame has the bus rolling, and we expect them to cover the point spread. We’re taking Notre Dame -5 (-110) at BetOnline.

Mich vs. ND Money Line

Carrying the momentum of their big win and improving play, I expect Notre Dame to come out on the right side of this one. With that said, I’m not crazy about -210 and prefer -110 giving up 5 points. Crazy things happen in college football, and Michigan has a legitimate chance in this game. I don’t see value in -210 on the Notre Dame money line.

The Michigan money line is +180, and if you really believe in them to win straight-up this week, this isn’t a bad bet. They’ll have to play a great game, but at +180 I can see the attraction. Bovada doesn’t have their Michigan vs. Notre Dame money lines posted yet (what’s new?), so go to BetOnline for +180 on Michigan.

Michigan vs Notre Dame Over/Under

We like what we saw from the ND defense and think they can keep the Wolverines from running wild. Michigan isn’t exactly a defensive powerhouse this season, but they should be properly motivated for this game and should play better than they have so far this season.

I’m expecting a game in the 24-17 to 27-21 range, which gives us a good bet on the under. Once again, Bovada doesn’t have their Michigan/Notre Dame over/under odds posted yet, so u49 (-110) at BetOnline is our best option.
