March Madness 2015: LSU vs. NC State gambling lines

Bet on LSU vs. NC State - 2015 March Madness#9 LSU Tigers vs. #8 NC State Wolfpack preview

Start: Thursday, March 19th 2015 at 9:20pm ET
Location: Consol Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Watch: TBS

IN one of the most anticipated match-ups of the second round – the #8 NC State Wolfpack play the #9 LSU Tigers in the East region on Thursday night at the Consol Arena.

North Carolina State 20-13 (10-8 ACC) have had a rough season. The Wolfpack struggled through ACC play and were routed by Duke in the ACC tournament quarterfinals last Thursday.

I’m much higher on LSU 22-10 (11-7 SEC) during March Madness. The Tigers boast an average win-loss record, but five of the Tigers ten losses have been by four points or less, including a 2-point loss against Kentucky (71-69) back on February 10th 2015.

Action has been split on who’ll win this game. NC State are receiving 66% of the action in the point spread market, while 66% of the action on the money line has been on LSU. The public expects points too, as nearly 80% of the action is on the over.

Why the LSU Tigers will win

Starters: Jarell Martin, Jordan Mickey, Tim Quarterman, Keith Hornsby and Jalyn Patterson.

Offensive Stats: 73.7 PPG (41st), 12.1 ORPG (68th), 15.7 APG (16th) and 45.6% FG% (77th).

Defensive Stats: 67.7 PPG (210th), 27.1 DRPG (8th), 6.2 BPG (7th) and 7.3 SPG (59th).

LSU are a team that likes to bang hard in the paint. Martin (16.9 PPG and 9.2 RPG) and Mickey (15.5 PPG and 9.8 RPG) are the focal point on the Tigers. The two big men have to assert their dominance against the less talented big men on the Wolfpack.

NC State have size at forward, but none of the big men are much of a threat offensively. LSU are great at protecting the paint on the defensive end too. The Tigers block a lot of shots, are strong on the defensive glass and rank well in steals.

The biggest job for the Tigers will be stopping the Wolfpack guards. Quarterman and Hornsby will have a size advantage on the small NC State guards and that’ll help them on the defensive end. This match-up is perfect for the Tigers to start March Madness.

Why the NC State Wolfpack will win

Starters: Lennard Freeman, Abdul-Malik Abu, Anthony Barber, Ralston Turner and Trevor Lacey.

Offensive Stats: 70.4 PPG (95th), 12.1 ORPG (68th), 11.6 APG (256th) and 43.7% FG% (163rd)

Defensive Stats: 65.4 PPG (141st), 25.7 DRPG (38th), 5.3 BPG (16th) and 4.0 SPG (346th)

This match-up is a battle between the LSU big men and the Wolfpack guards. Lacey is a great player and the Wolfpack will go as far as he takes them. Lacey averages 15.8 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 3.4 APG and 0.9 SPG. He also shoots 39.8% from beyond the arc (72 of 181).

The other two guards provide consistent scoring as well. Barber averages 12.1 PPG and Turner averages 13.1 PPG. In order for NCSU to win they need their three starting guards to combine for over 40 points and I’m not sure they’ll do that against LSU.

Freeman (3.4 PPG and 5.6 RPG) and Abu (6.0 PPG and 4.5 RPG) don’t provide much scoring at the forward position, but they lead the team in rebounds and will be relied upon heavily to try and keep the Tigers two big men in check.

LSU vs. NC State money line prediction

You have two options – take the Tigers at +2 (-110) on the point spread or at +110 to win SU on the money line.

I’m definitely betting on the Tigers money line. March Madness always features a lot of nail biters and getting +2 points can mean the difference between a win or loss a lot of the time, but I’m confident the Tigers will knock NC State out of the tournament.

Lacey is a great player and will likely post the best overall numbers in this game, but it won’t be enough.

NC State need big production from Turner and Barber too, and at least one of them will struggle. LSU have size on the perimeter and will contest a lot of shots. I always like teams that score easy baskets under the rim over teams that rely on outside shooting.

Tigers vs. Wolfpack over/under picks

The public is betting the over, but 140.5 points is too many for this match-up.

Under the bright lights of March Madness – pressure can and will get to most of these young players. If just one guard on NC State struggles to get going from the field it’ll be tough for the Wolfpack to come close to their season average of 70.4 PPG.
