LSU vs Florida Betting Lines

What: #4 LSU Tigers at #10 Florida Gators NCAA Football
When: 3:30 pm EST. Saturday. October 12, 2012
Where: Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. Gainesville, FL.

College football bettors were scratching their heads last week when the (then) #3 LSU Tigers (5-0, 2-3 ATS) barely knocked off the never-ranked Towson Tigers. That lackluster effort cost point spread bettors big bucks after LSU beat Towson 38-22 (not so impressive for -42 point favorites).

The #10 Florida Gators (4-0, 3-1 ATS) on the other hand, are licking their chops at the opportunity to take advantage of an LSU squad that just doesn’t seem worthy of a top ranking. But despite their successes, they haven’t been particularly challenged much this season, so this game could be extremely tough for them. Let’s take a look at the latest LSU vs. Florida betting lines.

BetOnline is typically a better choice for straight bets, while Bovada is better for live betting. At the time this article is being written, Bovada doesn’t have their Saturday live betting schedule posted yet. However, I expect they’ll be offering this game, and bettors will be able to wager on hundreds of props while it happens. BetOnline is better for point spread, money line and over/under bets because they post their betting lines much earlier. Of course this means that handicappers have an easier time finding value and can make smarter bets. Both of these books welcome US customers and Visa credit & debit cards for making deposits. Both of them offer mobile sports betting as well.

LSU Tigers

-2.5 (-110) at BetOnline

-3 (+105) at Bovada

The LSU Tigers worked very hard to earn their 41st consecutive victory over a non-conference opponent last week, in a game that will go down as one their worst performances to date. Despite the final score, this one could easily have slipped away from last year’s BCS contender.

So what happened?

For starters, LSU turned over the ball three times against lowly Towson. They actually fumbled five times but were able to recover two of them. The boys from Baton Rouge further shot themselves in the foot by committing 10 penalties for 69 yards. This kind of sloppy play indicates some serious discipline problems and tells us a lot about why Alabama grabbed the BCS title last season.

LSU’s saving grace against Towson was junior QB Zach Mettenberg (78-119, 1016 yds, 6 TDs, 2 INTs, 11 sacks), who turned around his forgettable first-half play with a decent late game effort. He wound up passing for 238 yards, but lost a whopping 52 yards on five rushes.

If last week didn’t constitute a wake up call for Louisiana State, they’ve got no shot at beating the Gators. If it did, this could be a great game.

Florida Gators

-2.5 (-110) at BetOnline

-3 (+105) at Bovada

To say that Florida had a better time last week than LSU is a bit of an understatement. They shut out Kentucky (1-4, 1-4 ATS) and put up an easy 38 points in the process. They didn’t dominate right away, scoring only a field goal in the first quarter, but they never struggled the way the Tigers did against Towson.

We expect ranked SEC teams to thoroughly dominate unranked teams like the Wildcats, and Florida definitely delivered. The Gators defense held Kentucky to just 219 yards total offense and only 60 of those were in the air. Three separate Florida players picked off Kentucky backup QB Morgan Newton.

Offensively, sophomore QB Jeff Driskel had a decent day, completing 18 of 27 for 203 yards, a TD and an INT. He’ll need his best stuff this week against LSU.

LSU vs Florida Betting Predictions

The last time these two teams met, LSU dominated Florida 41-11. But last year’s LSU team was a bit more inspired than this year’s crop, and we’re not expecting a similar blowout, especially not in Gainesville. As such a huge game, the handle will be massive on this LSU/Florida matchup. Betting lines will be moving all the way until game time, so keep your eye out for quickly passing value.

LSU vs Florida Point Spread Prediction

Online sportsbooks have LSU as just -2.5 point favorites, and that’s a reflection of their mediocore performances to date. These guys just haven’t delivered what the betting public is looking for. I agree that this one is going to be close, but think the Tigers will wake up and cover the point spread.

Florida vs LSU Over/Under (Total) Prediction

Both of these teams have mostly, cruised to big victories over lesser opponents, but that may not be in the cards this week. The LSU vs. Florida over/under opened at 44, and has been bet down to 42 at the time this article is being written.

I’m expecting this game to be a classic SEC defensive duel and think the 42 point over/under is right whee it should be. I liked the under when it was 44, but 42 looks like a time to sit tight. If you want to bet the over/under, I’d recommend waiting until closer to game time. If the total goes up from here, I’d recommend the under. If it goes down, I’d take the over.
