Jets vs. Falcons Monday Night Football Preview

New York Jets vs. Atlanta Falcons – NFL Week 5 MNF

Kick-Off Time: Monday, October 7th 2013 at 8:40pm ET
Stadium: Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia
Watch On: ESPN

On Monday Night Football the New York Jets 2-2 (3-1 ATS) play the Atlanta Falcons 1-3 (1-3 ATS) at the Georgia Dome. After a rough start to the season this is a must-win game for the Falcons, but the big question is whether or not they can cover the big spread.

Latest Jets vs. Falcons Betting Lines

Nearly 85% of the action has been on the Falcons ATS this week and we’ve seen the point spread move from the opening line of –7.5 points to –9.5/-10 depending where you look. The over/under opened at 45.5 points and has been bet down to O/U 44 points. You can get +10 at Bovada.

Can the Falcons Bounce Back After a 1-3 Start to the Season

A lot of handicappers had the Falcons pegged as Super Bowl contenders during the off-season, myself included. Atlanta has had to deal with early injuries. Steven Jackson is out plus Roddy White and Julio Jones have been dealing with nagging injuries each week.

Atlanta has a home win against St. Louis (31-24) and losses against the Saints, Dolphins and Patriots. It’s clear that losing Jackson has hurt the Falcons running game and the team. Matt Ryan threw for 421 passing yards last week, but they lost to NE at home (30-23).

Offensively the Falcons have one of the best passing attacks (316.5 PYPG – 4th), but they only rank 23rd in rushing (82 RYPG). Atlanta is middle of the pack in scoring (23.5 PPG – 14th). Turnovers haven’t been much of a problem either (1.2 Giveaways Per Game – 5th).

This won’t be an easy game by any stretch though, as the Jets have a T10 defensive unit. The Jets rank 8th in passing yards allowed (203.8 PYPG), 4th in rushing yards allowed (79.2 RYPG) and 13th in points allowed (22 PPG). They only average 0.5 TO PG – 31st).

There is no way the Falcons will be able to run the football and with the Jets selling out on the pass Ryan will have to ensure that he doesn’t throw any sloppy interceptions. Scoring will be at a premium for Atlanta. The Jets have the 10th best red zone defense.

The Jets defense is rolling, but the offense is another story. Rookie Geno Smith is going through some growing pains and he already has 8 INT’s on the season compared to just 4 passing TD’s. The Jets have been averaging 3 giveaways per game (31st).

New York is slightly above average in passing yards (243.2 PYPG – 15th) and rushing yards (123 RYPG – 12th), but due the turnovers they only average 17 PPG (29th). Scoring 17 PPG on average isn’t going to get it done in the NFL with pass happy offenses.

Atlanta’s defense is only averaging 1 takeaway per game, so I wouldn’t expect too many turnovers for the Jets this week. This game is a must-win situation for the Falcons, but I question whether they’ll have enough firepower to cover such a big point spread.

Important On-Field Battles in NYJ vs. ATL

Cromartie and rookie Milliner will have their biggest test this season against White and Jones. Both WR’s on the Falcons have been banged up, which gives the Jets a small advantage, but White and Jones have shown us they can still be beasts when playing hurt.

The Jets could upset the Falcons and potentially win this game if the CB’s can shutdown these two WR’s. I’m not saying that a win for New York is likely, but if the Falcons are unable to pass consistently on this defense they won’t be able to put up points.

Geno Smith has to step up in this game and show that he’s at the very least improving. Atlanta has a horrid passing defense and they don’t force many turnovers. This is the type of game where Geno needs to excel and not make mistakes that’ll cost his team.

Jets vs. Falcons Best Bets

The point spread is a bit too big for me in this one, so I’ll be on the Jets. Geno shouldn’t have another multiple interception game and the Falcons offense doesn’t look right. Atlanta will win at home, but I think they have to grind it out in the 4th quarter.
