Can Chennai Super Kings cement their claim to the Indian Premier League throne, or will the resurgent Mumbai Indians continue their march towards the playoffs?

That’s the question that will be answered when these two in-form sides meet at Chepauk on Friday evening.

With seven wins and 14 points from 10 games, Super Kings are certainly living up to their ‘glamour club’ status in 2015.

Although they remain locked in a tussle Rajasthan Royals for outright top spot, Chennai’s superior net run rate and games in hand makes them favourites to claim pole position at the end of the league section.

And with a squad featuring five of India’s first XI from the 2015 Cricket World Cup, how could they not be the frontrunners?

Throw in international stars Brendon McCullum, Faf du Plessis, Dwayne Bravo and Dwayne Smith, and it is easy to see why CSK are cruising towards an eighth consecutive IPL playoff campaign.

Their fortunes could be further bolstered by the return of star spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who has missed the last three games with a finger injury sustained in the two-run win over Kolkata Knight Riders late last month.

Whether Ashwin gets the green light or young Pawan Negi keeps his spot, coach Stephen Fleming and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni should feel confident of extending Super Kings’ imperious winning record at Fortress Chepauk.

Indeed, if Mumbai Indians mean to keep the good times rolling and ramp up their late push for the finals, they would have to become the first team this season to beat CSK at home.

It’s a daunting task, but one which the visitors could not be in better shape to tackle.

Mumbai looked dead in the water after losing their first four games of IPL 2015, but five victories from their last six fixtures have launched them up the ladder and back into top-four contention.

Now, with four wins on the trot, Ricky Ponting’s men have the chance not only to sneak into the playoff positions, but to close the gap between them and Chennai to just two points.

The most remarkable thing about the Indians’ stunning turnaround is that it might never have occurred but for a serendipitous injury to one of their star players.

Corey Anderson started the season in fine personal form, with two 50s in four knocks, but a broken finger appeared to prematurely end his 2015 IPL campaign.

His absence made room for fellow New Zealand international Mitchell McClenaghan in the bowling attack, while allowing West Indian all-rounder Kieron Pollard to take on more responsibility with the bat.

That change has seen Mumbai stumble onto the magic formula, which means they have a big decision to make now that Anderson has rejoined the squad and returned to training.

Reports suggest the Kiwi’s fractured finger is yet to properly heal, however, so it seems most likely Ponting and Co. will keep him up their sleeves for a possible playoff push.

Match predictions

Result – Super Kings to win ($1.57 at CrownBet.com)
Highest opening partnership – Super Kings ($1.72 at Bet365)
Most match sixes – Super Kings ($1.85 at www.Bet365.com)

It’s been a fairytale run for Mumbai Indians, but the buck stops at Chepauk. The Super Kings are nigh-on unbeatable at their home ground, which is why all the leading online bookmakers have them at less than $1.60 odds to win. You should be able to find a bit more value in the IPL props betting markets, especially if you fancy Indians openers Simmons and Patel to outscore McCullum and Smith (which we don’t).

Best value bets for top batsman

CSK – Suresh Raina ($4.50 at Bet365.com)

While maybe not as consistent as Smith, nor quite as brutal as McCullum, the Indian left-hander can hang with the very best of them in Twenty20 cricket. Longer odds than either of the Chennai openers, more chance of spending time at the crease than Dhoni or du Plessis and 52 runs on his last dig all add up to make Raina a very attractive addition to any bet slip.

Indians – Lendl Simmons ($3.75 at Bet365)

Flip a coin, then stake it on either Simmons or R Sharma (also $3.75) to top score. Both have been extremely consistent contributors to Mumbai’s revival, but the West Indian’s three half-centuries from the top of the order probably put him just ahead of his skipper on value.

IPL betting odds for top bowler

CSK – Dwayne Bravo ($4.00 at Bet365.com)

With 16 IPL wickets at a strike rate of 12.3, Bravo is one of the most dangerous bowlers in T20 cricket right now. The West Indies all-rounder has struck nine times in five games at Chepauk, and his propensity to take wickets in bundles of two and three makes him a real goer for the top Super Kings wicket-taker markets.

Indians – Lasith Malinga ($3.60 at Bet365)

The Sri Lankan slinger is a proven IPL Twenty20 performer, and this season has been business as usual. Malinga has taken at least one wicket in each of his last nine games, while best bowling figures of 4 for 23 against Sunrisers Hyderabad show the 31-year-old still has the venom required to be a match-winner.
