Idaho vs. LSU Betting Lines

What: Idaho Vandals vs #3 LSU Tigers NCAA Football
When: 8:00 pm EST. Saturday. September 15, 2012
Where: Tiger Stadium. Baton Rouge, LA

The #3 LSU Tigers (2-0, 1-1 ATS) have an extremely soft non-conference opponent on tap this week when they square off against the Idaho Vandals (0-2, 1-1 ATS). LSU has outscored their last two opponents by a combined score of 82-18. For Idaho, life hasn’t been quite as good. They’ve been outscored 41-16 by the one-two Eastern Washington/Bowling Green combo.

Suffice it to say, it won’t be a tough haul for the Tigers, but this is the kind of game that gives experienced point spread bettors some real fits. Be sure and check out our free point spread, money line and over/under picks at the end of this post.

Thirty point and higher lines are something we like to steer clear of, especially when the favorite is facing an SEC rival (Auburn) next week. LSU is less likely to keep their starters in late and run up the score, saving them for tougher opponents coming up. At -42.5, staying ahead by six touchdowns and a two-point conversion is tough, really tough. While it definitely happens (like it did when Texas slugged New Mexico 45-0 last week) betting on a line like this is the very definition of gambling.

Even the over/under is tough sell at 55. Coming up with that number means Idaho scores a TD and a field goal, and LSU scores six TD’s and a couple of field goals.

LSU Tigers

LSU has yet to be tested this season after matchups with North Texas and Washington. We were a bit surprised and impressed at how the Tigers utterly dominated the Huskies last week.

That vaunted LSU defense held Washington to a field goal on just 26 rushing and 157 passing yards. Washington wasn’t having a great day, but they’re definitely better than Idaho. No matter how good or bad they are, LSU held them to about as close to nothing as you can get.

Offensively, LSU offered a similar dose of domination. Quarterback Zach Mettenberger completed 12-18 for 195 yards and a touchdown. Junior running back Alfred Blue had a solid outing as well, putting up 101 yards on 14 carries and a TD.

Any way you look at them, the LSU Tigers are a National Championship contender and in another league entirely from Idaho.

Idaho Vandals

It’s hard to quantify how badly things are going for Idaho this season. They’ve dropped their first two games to lower level football programs (sorry, Bowling Green) and now they’re visiting Death Valley. Last week they mustered up just six rushing yards against the Falcons.

The high note of their performance was a 30-37, 352 yard, one TD, one INT effort from QB Dominique Blackman. Those numbers are great, but that INT doomed the team to a loss. We’re also leery of QBs who can put up that many yards without delivering points. It speaks of big problems throughout the offense.

Still, if they can put up just ten points, LSU will have a tough time covering the point spread.

Idaho vs. LSU Point Spread

These monstrous 42.5 lines are tough to handicap. The BCS gives plenty of incentive for LSU to run up the score, but the Tigers won’t be interested in risking starters to damage Idaho.

We’re recommending the Idaho point spread of +42.5 (-110) at BetOnline.com.

Last season the Tigers only covered once as a 30-point or higher favorite. LSU will likely be running a lot of rushing plays and is playing Auburn next week. They’ll play very conservatively and should win by 35-39, but 42.5 is just too much.

LSU/Idaho Moneyline

If you can find a money line on this game and you’re comfortable risking money on a -2000 play, go for it. There’s almost no chance of a Vandal win, but money lines like this have little value.

Idaho vs. LSU Over/Under

That 55 point LSU vs. Idaho over/under is a tricky play, too. We’re not writing off the over entirely, but the numbers don’t add up. Remember, six LSU TD’s, an Idaho TD and field goal still won’t do it. Play it safe with the under.

We’re taking the under 55 (-110) at BetOnline.
