Florida Gators vs. LSU Tigers Week 7 Preview

The #10 LSU Tigers 5-1 (3-2-1 ATS) hosts the #17 Florida Gators 4-1 (2-3 ATS) at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge on Saturday. The game will be aired live on CBS starting at 3:30pm ET and it’s definitely one of the most anticipated match-ups across the nation this week.

Latest Odds in LSU vs. Florida

The Gators are on the road and they’re currently +7 to +7.5 underdogs in Baton Rouge. The main reason for the big point spread is because of the Tigers great offense. The over/under is at 47.5 points in this game and I think that’s a bit too small for this game.

Can the Gators Defense Stop the Tigers Offense

Florida has been winning games with defense this season, which is a surprise for the Gators. Florida has only allowed 12.2 PPG (4th) while giving up 152 PYPG (8th) and 65 RYPG (2nd). This defense is no joke although this will be their biggest test of the season.

The Tigers have one of the best offenses in the history of the school this season. LSU is averaging 45.5 PPG (9th), 291.5 PYPG (27th) and 197.2 RYPG (43rd) on offense. Zach Mettenberger has already thrown for 1738 passing yards, 15 TD’s and just 2 INT’s.

Jeremy Hill is playing great as well right now. Hill has only had 79 carries, but he has gained 7.5 yards per rush and he already has rushed for 9 TD’s. The Gators front seven is tough to run on, but Hill has a great o-line and it’s tough playing at Tiger Stadium.

Will Florida Be Able to Move the Football

So far the Gators schedule hasn’t been that difficult and the offense has still struggled immensely. Tyler Murphy took over the QB job after Driskel went down with an injury and he has played better. In three games he has a rating of 181.5 with 5 TD’s and 1 INT.

Florida is only averaging 201.4 PYPG (96th), but the run game has picked up the slack (192 RYPG – 49th). The problem on offense is that the Gators are settling for FG’s a lot of the time rather than scoring TD’s and they’ve only averaged 25 PPG (93rd).

The LSU defense is giving up 159.5 RYPG (86th) and 207.5 PYPG (69th) while allowing teams to score 24.7 PPG (52nd). Florida should be able to find running room on this team and if they can extend drives that’ll leave less time for the LSU offense to hurt them.

Where This Game Will Be Won

Both teams are going to look to establish the run game in this one. The battle in the trenches is going to go a long way in deciding who will win this match-up. The Tigers d-line has had some problems, but at home they seem to play much better as a unit.

The running backs will get a lot of work and I expect both teams to have success. Hill is a great RB and the Gators can’t sell out on the run because Mettenberger can beat them downfield. Matt Jones and Mack Brown will both share the workload for the Gators.

Murphy has filled in very well and he has been improving, but this LSU defense at home is going to be tough to throw against. I think he’ll see a lot of pressure and he’s going to have to make quick decisions. I also expect the Gators to focus on running the football.

Mettenberger has the edge in the QB battle in this match-up, but the Gators secondary isn’t easy to throw against. He hasn’t made many mistakes yet this season, but the Gators are great at forcing turnovers and I don’t think Mettenberger will have a huge game.

Tigers vs. Gators Predictions

Last year these two teams played in Florida and the Gators won the game 14-6. I don’t think we can expect such a low scoring game with the resurgent offense in LSU and with this game being played in Baton Rouge, but I expect Florida to stay within the spread.

Neither team can afford another loss at this point in the season; so expect both of them to put everything on the line. I would have considered LSU at –3.5, but getting over a TD in an SEC game between two T25 teams is just too much to pass up.
