Fresno State vs Oregon Betting Line

What: Fresno State Bulldogs vs. #4 Oregon Ducks NCAA Football
When: 6:30 pm EST. Saturday. September 8, 2012
Where: Autzen Stadium. Eugene, Oregon

The fast scoring #4 Oregon Ducks (1-0, 0-1 ATS) are big-time favorites heading into their match up this week against the Fresno State Bulldogs (1-0, 1-0 ATS). The Fresno St. is clearly outclassed by the rapid fire Ducks, but are they outclassed by 34.5 points?

Both of these programs looked solid in their opening games, but Oregon shouldn’t have any problem taking the SU win. With that said, this is an experienced Fresno St. squad that’s stacked with returning starters who could give the Ducks a challenge to cover the huge point spread.

This Fresno St. vs. Oregon point spread is huge, and spreads like this always make it challenging to cap. Fresno St. has the ability to score, which will force the Oregon offense to go nuts. There’s only so much time in a game, so both teams will need to be effective against there opponents defenses.

That sky-high over/under of 78.5 is good indication of how highly oddsmakers & handicappers think of Oregon’s speedy offense. It’s the highest over/under of the week, and a window into the Bulldogs’ potential. We’re not predicting an upset or anything, but it’s important for bettors to avoid underestimating Fresno’s scoring potential.

To cover the point spread and the over, we would need Oregon to score no less than 57, and Fresno State to score no less than 22. It can happen, but it’s asking a lot.

Oregon Ducks

Last season a superstar heavy Oregon Ducks squad went 12-2 (8-5-1 ATS) and impressed the betting world with their ability to score quickly against bewildered opponents. They scored 40 or more points in 10 games in 2011 and opened 2012 with a 57-34 win against the Arkansas State Red Wolves (0-1, 1-0 ATS).

How a Sun Belt Conference opponent managed to put up just one less point on the Ducks than USC did last year is a question worth unpacking. We know that Oregon starters were resting comfortably at halftime with a 50-0 lead. We also know that the Bulldogs may have a real shot at keeping this game somewhat close.

Defensively, the Ducks looked decent, forcing three turnovers against Arkansas State. However, they also gave up 304 passing yards and 226 rushing yards. Again, it bodes well for a closer game than the point spread reflects.

Fresno State Bulldogs

The Fresno St. Bulldogs are an experienced team and won’t necessarily be intimidated by a visit to Eugene. Like the Ducks, they built up an early lead in their opener, a 37-10 win over Weber State.

The Bulldogs rushed for 217 yards against Weber and senior running back Robbie Rouse had a very nice day with 22 rushes for 123 yards and a TD. Unfortunately, they won’t be running much against the Ducks. So it’s up to quarterback Derek Carr to stay focused and hit his targets in high pressure situations. After completing 20-25 for 298 yards and 2 TDs, we like his chances.

Expect the Bulldogs to be competitive in this.

Our Oregon vs Fresno State Free Picks

We aren’t ready to give Oregon as much credit as some others are. They’re a damn good football team, but to cover both the spread and the over is asking a lot of them.

Fresno St. vs. Oregon Point Spread Betting Pick

We’d caution Fresno St. vs. Oregon point spread bettors against taking Fresno State lightly. This is a team that’s greatly improved over last year and could play competitively against Oregon. The fact that this game opened at -30 and has already jumped to -34.5 (by Thursday night) is very scary. Add to it all that Oregon is 1-5-1 ATS in their last 7 home games, and things start to look bad for them. Take a chance on the underdog and expect to see something much closer than what the betting public is anticipating.

We’re taking Fresno St. and the points, at +34.5 (-110) at BetOnline.com.

Money Line Pick

None of the major online bookies have posted Oregon vs. Fresno St. money lines, and they may not. Even if we can find a money line on this game, we won’t be betting it. If anything, it would be smart to add Oregon to a money line parlay for a bit of additional value.

Over/Under Pick

If you’re looking at an over/under play, we think the over is a solid move whenever Oregon is in the picture. They’re perfectly capable of hanging 45-50+ points on almost any team out there, and their last three games have totaled 80, 83, and 91. On top of that, they’re 5-0 on the over in their last five games. They’re always somewhere around this total, and considering that Fresno St. is also capable of putting up points, we’re taking the over.
