Falcons Underdogs Against the Lions in London – NFL Week 8

Detroit Lions vs. Atlanta Falcons Preview

Start Time: Sunday, October 26th 2014 at 9:30am ET
Location: Wembley Stadium in London, England
Watch: FOX

The Atlanta Falcons 2-5 (2-5 ATS) are reeling right now as a team and I’m sure they wish they were playing at home instead of at Wembley Stadium in London. The Detroit Lions 5-2 (4-3 ATS) earned a hard fought win over the Saints last weekend at home.

Detroit has opened up as a –3.5 point favorite, but the line is trending up already. I’d jump on the Lions now before this line goes up too much. Atlanta has looked horrible as of late and a trip to London isn’t going to help this team get back on track either.

Reasons to Bet on the Detroit Lions to Cover ATS

Detroit’s defense hasn’t had the toughest schedule, but they held GB to 7 points and NO to 23 points. The defensive unit is giving up 15.0 PPG (2nd), 216.9 PYPG (7th) and 73.4 RYPG (2nd). Baltimore just held ATL to a TD and the Lions will have a chance to as well.

Atlanta’s defense is the polar opposite of the Lions defense. Atlanta’s allowing 28.4 PPG (30th), 274.4 PYPG (29th) and 137.7 RYPG (27th) on defense. Detroit’s offense hasn’t been 100% for a while, but even with the injuries they’ll expose the Falcons secondary.

The Falcons are 0-4 away from the Georgia Dome this season. This is scheduled as a home game for Atlanta, but clearly it isn’t, as the game is being played in London, England. This is a tough trip for a team to make when they’ve been struggling like Atlanta has.

I’m sure Detroit isn’t thrilled about the trip either, but this team can play away from home. Right now they lead the NFC North and can’t afford dropping a game to a poor Atlanta team. Both teams are on a bye next week, so the trip won’t be too bad.

DET @ ATL Game Preview

Atlanta has the better offense in this game, but will they be able to show that? Atlanta still averages 24.4 PPG (12th), 289.6 PYPG (5th) and 98.1 RYPG (23rd) despite being held to 254 total yards of offense and 7 points against the Ravens last week.

Detroit can’t seem to run the football (82.4 RYPG – 31st) despite having Reggie Bush and Joique Bell in the line-up. The pass game is starting to falter as well because of an injury to Calvin Johnson. Detroit is averaging 249.7 PYPG (13th) and 20.0 PPG (25th).

Golden Tate has proven to be one of the best signings of the off-season. Tate leads the team with 48 receptions for 649 receiving yards and 2 TD’s. Tate has proven to be great after the catch as well and he isn’t just a deep threat down the field anymore.

These two teams don’t play each other every year. They’ve played each other three times since 2008 and the Falcons have gone 3-0 in those games. They didn’t play last year though and the Falcons have really fallen apart the past year and a half.

Turnovers are unlikely to play a huge role in this game. Detroit has a +1 TO differential (14th) while Atlanta has a –1 TO differential (21st). The Falcons have forced more turnovers than the Lions, but they’ve also committed more on offense.

Lions vs. Falcons Predictions

If this game was in Atlanta I’d like them to get a win and I’m sure we wouldn’t see this point spread that we have. However, that’s not the case and with this game being played in London I give the edge to the Lions who have the better defense and run game.

Detroit may not have the better run game on paper, but they definitely have two RB’s that are capable of breaking off big plays at anytime on the ground or through the air. Atlanta is struggling on both sides of the football and this could be a blowout.

Atlanta won’t get any yards on the ground and when a defense can focus on shutting the pass life becomes easier for them. Detroit will employ a similar game plan to the Ravens and they’ll be able to maintain 1st place in the NFC North heading into their bye week.
