2012 Conference USA College Football Preview

Last year the Houston Cougars shot out of nowhere and showed the college football world that the Conference USA was not as bad as they thought. Sharp bettors, on the other hand, have long looked to C-USA as the home of undervalued teams that just don’t get much attention from handicappers. Betting on C-USA futures shouldn’t be complicated because only a couple teams have a legitimate shot.

Futures bettors should also note that the University of Central Florida just received a ban on post-season play that’s going to impact their odds of winning. Analyzing the 2012 C-USA Championship Futures Betting Markets

Handicapping this year’s C-USA race is as much a process of elimination as anything else – as we’ll see later. Once you’ve eliminated Houston and Central Florida, Tulsa (8-5, 7-1, 7-6 ATS)  is the last man standing.

The Golden Hurricanes come into this season with Nebraska transfer QB Cody Green at the helm. Green is well suited to be a big fish in a small pond and should do very well in Tulsa.

Tulsa benefits from an early soft schedule that gets very tough come November. Over a three week period they face Arkansas, Houston and UCF. If they can pass that test, they’ll be bowl bound with a C-USA championship in their pockets.

Houston Cougars Rebuilding Begins in 2012

Houston (13-1, 8-1, 11-3 ATS) seemed ready for the big time in 2011 until Southern Mississippi (12-2, 7-2, 9-5 ATS) beat them 49-28 in the C-USA Title Game. That sent the Cougars and phenom QB Case Keenum to the Music City Bowl and scraping back up is going to be tough.

The 2012 Houston Cougars are helmed by sophomore QB David Piland (201-345, 2641 yds, 24 TDs, 14 INT). Piland’s numbers are impressive but remember he saw action in a lot of Keenum-engineered blowouts.

Houston does benefit from an extremely soft schedule this season. With the exception of a road trip to UCLA, this season looks pretty squishy. Watch for a rematch with Tulsa on November 10 to be their biggest C-USA challenge.

UCF Knights Out of the Picture in C-USA

If you’d been reading this before the end of July, the UCF Knights would be the favorite to win the Conference, but thanks to a ban on post-season play, they’re out of the picture. That said, college football point spread bettors should not discount these guys.

Coming into his sophomore year, UCG QB Blake Bortles (75-110, 958 yds, 6 TDs, 3 INT) has seen plenty of action and is ready to move up a notch or two.

UCF has tough non-conference match-ups against Missouri and Ohio State early in the season. They won’t be eligible for anything except the role of spoiler this season and bettors should expect them to do just that.
