Indianapolis Colts vs. Tennessee Titans Preview

Start Time: Thursday, November 14th 2013 at 8:25pm ET
Stadium: LP Field in Nashville, Tennessee
Station: Watch Live on NFL Network

The Indianapolis Colts (6-3) and Tennessee Titans (4-5) both suffered setbacks last week. The Titans lost to the Jaguars (29-27) while Indy lost to the Rams (38-8). Both teams were playing at home in the losses and now have a short week to prepare for this game.

Jake Locker was injured early against the Jaguars, which is the main reason why they ended up losing the game. Locker is out for the remainder of the season, which means that the Titans will have to rely on Ryan Fitzpatrick who has a QBR of 76.0 in limited action.

Latest Titans vs. Colts ML Odds

The point spread in this game opened up at –2.5 points and has been bet up to the key number of –3 points in favor of the Colts, but I think the value is on the Titans money line at home. Indianapolis has looked a lot worse the last two weeks than the Titans have.

How Ryan Fitzpatrick Can Lead Tennessee to an AFC South Win

The Titans had four turnovers against Jacksonville, so their first priority has to be protecting the football against Indy. Fitzpatrick had a good game through the air in relief of Locker last week, as he completed 22/33 pass attempts for 264 passing yards and 2 TD’s.

Tennessee has to get out to a fast start to win this game as well. The Colts beat the Texans (27-24), but they were losing 21-3 after the 1H before making a comeback. Indy started slow against the Rams last week as well and was down 28-0 after the 1H was over.

In the 1H of games this season the Titans have been notoriously slow starters and only average 8.3 PPG (30th). After gaining 30 yards on 12 carries and fumbling once I expect Johnson to have a much better game against the Colts who have allowed 126.6 RYPG (26th).

Fitzpatrick should do fine against the Colts secondary, which is allowing an average 241.2 PYPG (21st). In the Colts last two games the opposing QB’s (Clemens & Keenum) have gone a combined 29 of 50 for 597 passing yards, 5 TD passes and 0 interceptions.

If the Titans can build up a quick lead like the Texans and Rams did they should win, as it’ll force Luck to throw a lot of passes. Luck was forced to throw the football 47 times last week and he was intercepted three times while only throwing one TD pass.

Luck will have a tough time against the Titans secondary, as they only allow an average of 211.3 PYPG (8th). Tennessee also averages 3.1 sacks per game and 0.88 interceptions per game. They have to win the turnover battle this week to beat the favored Colts.

Tennessee has struggled against the run (114.9 RYPG Allowed – 21st), but the Colts offense only averages 110.2 RYPG (15th) despite the depth they have at RB. Part of the problem for the lack of a run game lately has been that the Colts are down big early in games.

Players to Watch on Both Teams

Johnson has struggled against the Colts in his career. In nine games against Indy, Johnson has averaged 18.4 carries and 67.3 rushing yards per game while only scoring 1 rushing TD. This Colts front seven is weaker than in year’s past and Johnson needs 100+ yards.

T.Y. Hilton has emerged as the #1 WR for the Colts with Reggie Wayne dealing with an injury. Hilton leads the team with 41 catches for 663 receiving yards and 5 TD’s. Hilton averages 16.2 yards per reception and has to find a way to beat the Titans secondary.

Verner is tied for the lead in interceptions in the NFL with five on the season. He’ll have a tough match-up against Hilton, but if Luck is even a little bit off on his throws Verner is likely to intercept the football. I expect a big game from Verner in the secondary.

IND vs. TEN Predictions

If the Colts come out like they have the last two weeks they’ll lose this game. They struggle against the run and Johnson will have a bounce back performance after last week’s dud. As long as the Titans don’t turn the football over I like their defense to hold strong.
