Chelsea odds-on favorites against PSG at Stamford Bridge

Bet on Eden Hazard to score first in Chelsea v PSGChelsea v PSG – Champions League Round of 16 (2nd Leg)

Start: Wednesday, March 11th 2015 at 2:45pm ET
Stadium: Stamford Bridge in Fulham, London
Station: ESPN

THE 2nd leg between Chelsea and PSG in the Champions League round of 16 is this Wednesday at Stamford Bridge.

In the opening leg, the match ended in 1-1 draw at Parc des Princes. Chelsea were pleased with the away result and are brimming with confidence ahead of the 2nd leg at home.

Chelsea opened the scoring in the 36th minute on a clinical header in the box by Branislav Ivanovic. PSG struggled through the 1H, but woke up in the 2H and controlled the match from that point on. Edison Cavani netted the equalizer in the 54th minute for the Parisians, but they couldn’t take the lead.

At the end of the day – Chelsea managed to score an away goal. That puts pressure on PSG to score at Stamford Bridge. If Chelsea keeps a clean sheet they’ll automatically advance.

PSG looked good in the 2H of the 1st leg, however, the bookmakers aren’t giving the French side much of a chance in the 2nd leg. Chelsea have opened up as odds-on favorites. The over/under is juiced heavily to the under. We’ll likely only see 1-2 goals in this match.

Will PSG or Chelsea advance to the Champions League QF?

Chelsea have been unstoppable at Stamford Bridge this season. In Champions League action, the Blues are 2-1-0 at home – with the lone draw coming against Schalke (1-1) back in September. Chelsea are undefeated at home in the Premier League too (11-2-0).

Both teams have been quite busy since the 1st leg last month.

PSG are 2-1-0 in Ligue 1 action and have now taken over first place on the table. The Parisians are undefeated in eight consecutive league matches. Chelsea are 1-1-0 in league play, plus they won the Capital One Cup Final against Tottenham.

Chelsea now have a taste of winning some hardware this season and are hungry to win more. The Blues still have a 5-point lead on the table over Man City and are fairly comfortable. The focus has now been put on the Champions League.

“We are 100 percent focused on the Champions League now because we want to go through,” Ivanovic said.

If there has been one problem with the Blues recent play, it has been the lack of scoring. Chelsea scored two goals in the Cup Final, as Jason Terry and Diego Costa both found the back of the net, but they played poorly in their two EPL matches.

The Blues beat West Ham (1-0) and were unable to get the full three points at home against Burnley (1-1).

PSG have never done well when playing in England. Last year, the Parisians lost 2-0 against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, which was a big enough victory for the Blues to advance. Now the Blues don’t even have to win the match in order to make the quarterfinals.

I thought PSG generated quite a bit of offense in the 1st leg once they settled into the match. Thibaut Courtois had to make a few big saves to keep Chelsea level on aggregate. With that being said – the Blues only concede 0.38 GPG at home in league play.

Chelsea v PSG predictions

My best bet is Chelsea to win the match. The odds aren’t great, but what can we expect? Chelsea are dominant at home and PSG are rarely in good form when playing in England. You could also consider betting Chelsea to win to nil (+210 at Coral).

Zlatan Ibrahimovic hasn’t been in scoring form and Jose Mourinho knows how to shutdown the towering striker.

Cavani is a threat to score again, although I don’t expect him to break the Chelsea back line away from home. Unless David Luiz can pull off some magic against his former team, I really don’t see the Parisians proving to be much of a scoring threat.

Chelsea seemingly coasted through their last two league matches, but they have their eye on the big prize – a Champions League title. I expect the Blues to come out firing at Stamford Bridge and it won’t take long for the French side to fold.

First goalscorer betting tips

Hazard scored the only goal in Chelsea’s last match – a 1-0 win over West Ham. Costa is still finding his form in the box and I expect the opening goal to come from a midfielder or potentially Ivanovic. Hazard is 7/1 in the market and I can’t pass up those odds.

Ivanovic is paying as high as 20/1 to score the first goal in the match and with his recent run of terror I’m sure he’ll be well backed at the betting window.

Nemanja Matic is banged up after a celebration in the Cup Final, but Mourinho has said he’s fit to start. Matic is priced at 25/1 to open up the scoring.

I won’t be targeting PSG players in the goalscorer markets, but your options are really limited to Ibrahimovic (6/1), Cavani (9/1) and Luiz (28/1). Luiz just scored over the weekend against Lens, but like the 1st leg – I recommend Cavani or no bet on PSG players.
