Chargers vs. Steelers Betting Lines

San Diego Chargers vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

When: 1:00pm ET. Sunday, December 9th 2012
Where: Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

The Pittsburgh Steelers 7-5 (5-6-1 ATS) are coming off of a huge 23-20 road win against Baltimore last week to snap a 2-game losing streak. More importantly, the win keeps the Steelers legitimately in the playoff hunt, where a loss would have made it very difficult for them.

TE Heath Miller had 5 catches for 97 yards and 1 TD, plus runningbacks Redman and Dwyer combined for 92 yards and 1 TD as well. Veteran QB Charlie Batch was filling in for injured Ben Roethlisberger, with a very respectable 25/36 for 276 yards and one TD. With Roethlisberger back from his injury, the Steelers should be able to win this home game and keep the dream alive.

The San Diego Chargers 4-8 (5-7 ATS) aren’t mathematically out of the playoff hunt yet, but their fate is essentially sealed. At this point, they’re really just playing for pride, like everyone (besides Denver) in the AFC West. The Chargers are on a 4-game losing streak which includes losses to TB (34-24), DEN (30-23), BAL (16-13) and CIN (20-13). Fun Fact: Heading into Sunday, the Broncos have one more win than the rest of the AFC West combined.

Chargers vs. Steelers Injury Report

There are a ton of injuries in this match-up. The Steelers will have Mike Adams and Ivan Taylor out for sure this week. LB LaMarr Woodley is also out. Ben Roethlisberger has had full participation in practice this week, and he’s making the start. There are a bunch of other guys who are banged up but listed as probable for the start.

San Diego will be missing a few players as well. Jeromey Clary, Donald Butler, and Eddie Royal are out, while Tyronne Green is doubtful. Mike Harris is also listed as questionable.

Steelers Defense vs. Chargers Offense

Troy Polamalu was back last week and the Steelers shut down the Ravens for the most part. Pittsburgh ranks 1st against the pass (166.7 PYPG) and 5th against the run (93.1 RYPG), but they’ve actually struggled getting pressure and turnovers this year.

Getting pressure on Rivers shouldn’t be a problem due to the makeshift O-line SD has to use due to injuries. The entire offense has struggled this season in SD. They rank 18th in passing yards (227.1 PYPG) and 26th in rushing yards (95 RYPG).

If the Steelers get pressure on the Chargers they may also be able to force TO’s. Pittsburgh only averages 1 takeaway per game (28th), but SD has been prone at turning the ball over (2 giveaways per game – 26th). The Steelers need to win the TO battle.

Ben Roethlisberger Suiting Up

Big Ben had a full practice Wednesday and is expected to play. Big Ben means the world to this Steelers team. They went 1-2 without him, but the offense was sputtering. PIT averaged 15.7 PPG in their L3, which is 5.5 points less than average.

The Steelers TO margin per game in their L3 was a whopping -3.9 compared to their season average of 0.9. Without Roethlisberger the yards per pass went down to 5.8 from 6.6 and 3rd down conversions have dropped to 28.21% from a season average of 44.77%.

San Diego Chargers vs. Pittsburgh Steelers Picks

Bet Steelers -7.5 (-115) at BetOnline.com

My prediction is that the Steelers will win at home and cover the point spread of 7.5 at BetOnline. We can also get the Steelers at +105, but we have to give up -9 at Bovada. I’m not crazy about the hook as it is, so I won’t be going this route.

The battered Chargers will find it tough to hang in this game. With Big Ben starting, the Steelers offense instantly becomes a threat. That’ll open up more running space for Dwyer/Redman, which of course helps the passing game as well.

Pittsburgh is 4-1 (2-2-1 ATS) at home this season while the Chargers are 2-4 (3-3 ATS) on the road. Pittsburgh still has a chance to win the AFC North after beating BAL last week, and this game is much more important to them than SD who is in shambles.

Chargers vs. Steelers Over/Under

Now that the Chargers vs. Steelers over/under is down to 39.5 (-110) at BetOnline, I’m ready to bet the over. I liked the under when it opened at 43 points, but didn’t bet it. Now that we’re this low, the over is looking really good to me.

Bet Over 39.5 (-110) at BetOnline.com

Bet Under 40 (-110) at Bovada.lv
