Chargers vs. Saints Money Line

What: San Diego Chargers vs. New Orleans Saints – Week 5, Sunday Night Football
When: 8:30pm EST. Sunday, October 7, 2012
Where: Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana

The San Diego Chargers (3-1, 3-1 ATS) have quietly been playing great football to begin the 2012 season. The New Orleans Saints (0-4, 1-3 ATS) are still winless, and their competition hasn’t been that tough yet – a terrible sign for Saints fans.

The Saints come in as -3.5 point favorites, which is giving money line bettors a lot of value for the Chargers. Taking the Chargers on the point spread is very enticing as well, but +170 on the money line is a better choice imo. I think San Diego has a great chance to win this game straight-up, so why not take a bit more risk for a lot more reward?

Latest Chargers vs. Saints Money Line Odds

New Orleans is one of only two teams that hasn’t won a game in 2012, but the Saints have still opened as the favorite. The current Chargers vs. Saints money line is SD +170 / NO -195 at the BetOnline Sportsbook.

Risking $195 to win $100 on a winless team is the worst bet I can think of in week 5. The Saints haven’t been blown out in any of their games yet, but they haven’t proven they’re capable of winning yet either. If you like the Saints, you probably like them in part due to the potential their offense has. If that’s the case, take them on the point spread and give up the points, risking -110 instead of -195.

Can the Saints Win Their 1st Game of the Season?

I have to admit that I didn’t think the Saints would be this bad without their head coach. The Saints are still one of the highest scoring teams in the league (27.5 PPG – 10th) and have one of the best passing attacks (320.8 PYPG – 3rd), but that’s about it.

The Saints running game has been brutal to begin the season (80.8 RYPG – 26th), and their defense is even worse. New Orleans ranks 29th in points against (32.5 PPG), 24th against the pass (276.5 PYPG), and 32nd against the rush (186.8 RYPG). Somebody let Rex Ryan know, there are two recipes on how to lose football games.

The Chargers have been getting it done defensively so far this season. San Diego has the 5th ranked rushing defense (79.2 RYPG), 17th ranked passing defense (237.2 PYPG) and they rank 6th in points allowed with an average of 17.8 PPG.

On offense, the Chargers haven’t put up huge numbers but they have been scoring points. The Chargers have averaged 25 PPG (14th) this season, but they only rank 23rd in passing offense (211.8 PYPG), and 17th in rushing offense (100 RYPG).

Ryan Matthews and Jackie Battle should share the running duties for the Chargers this week, and I expect them both to put up big numbers against a weak Saints d-line. That will open up space in the secondary for Phillip Rivers to sling the football.

Drew Brees will put up big numbers like he did last week against the Packers secondary, but the defense isn’t going to be able to stop the Chargers. At the end of the day, I have the Chargers winning this game in a shootout in the Superdome.

Against the Saints, Washington put up 40 points in the Superdome in week 1, and Kansas City put up 27 points there as well. If these teams can mustard that kind of offense in the Superdome, the Chargers should be able to hit 30+ points without much problem.

The San Diego Chargers also know that they need to stop QB Drew Brees in order to win, and they should game plan to shut down Graham. If they can shut down the Saints TE, the WR’s won’t be able to pick up all of the slack, also making it harder for the Saints to run the ball.

San Diego Chargers vs. New Orleans Saints Money Line Pick

Bet on San Diego Chargers +170 @ BetOnline

The Chargers money line is +170 at BetOnline right now, and it’s the same at Bovada. I think the San Diego money line has really good value at +170 based on how the two teams have started the 2012 NFL season.

At the time I’m writing this article (Saturday morning at 3:00am EST), the best Saints money line is -195 at BetOnline. The Saints haven’t shown us much this year, so I can’t see how anyone could justify a ML bet on them right now. Until they show us they’re ready to win games, handicappers should stay away from them.
