When: 10:15 pm EST. Monday, September 10, 2012

The San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders renew their rivalry in style, on week 1 Monday Night Football. These teams and their fans hate each other with a passion, making this a great way to start the season. This game is important for both teams, as it could have playoff implications in what should be a tight AFC West Division.

San Diego Chargers vs. Oakland Raiders Betting Lines

This game opened as a pick’em, but the line has since moved to Raiders -1 at most books. Early money has come in on the under, and the game total has dropped from 48 to 46.5 points. Below are the latest Chargers vs. Raiders betting lines from our favorite online sportsbooks.

San Diego Chargers

The San Diego Chargers finished last season with an 8-8 record (6-10 ATS) and Norv Turner is supposedly, once again on the hot seat. Last year the Chargers had the 6th best passing offense (260.2 PYPG) and scored the 6th most points (23.9 PPG), but the defense and mistakes cost them.

V-Jax is gone from San Diego along with Tolbert, but WR Robert Meachem was signed during the off-season. As of right now, TE Antonio Gates is healthy, obviously good news for Phillip Rivers. I expect Rivers to make Gates a common target against the Raiders.

Runningback Ryan Matthews is listed as ‘out’ for week 1, and Ronnie Brown should be getting the carries in his absence. The Oakland Raiders ranked 27th at stopping the run (127.7 RYPG) and need to improve on that, otherwise Brown could find too much running room on Monday night.

Oakland Raiders

The Oakland Raiders also went 8-8 last season, but they were one of the best teams against the spread (10-6 ATS). There are always high expectations in Oakland, despite the team’s struggles over the last several years. With Darren McFadden healthy and some improvements Oakland made during the off-season, Raider Nation is expecting a win on week 1 Monday Night Football.

The Oakland Raiders had the 7th ranked rushing attack last year (124.1 RYPG). McFadden is electrifying when he’s healthy, but the Raiders don’t have Michael Bush to cover for him if he goes down again. McFadden needs to show that he can become a durable back, and he’s capable of a huge season if he can stay injury-free.

Carson Palmer needs to have a good season in Oakland if he wants to remain a starter. A slow start to the year and Terrelle Pryor could be taking over the reigns. The good news is, the Raiders WR’s have tons of speed and Palmer has a great running game to help him out. As far as I’m seeing things right now, as Palmer goes – so do the Raiders. If Oakland is forced to go with Pryor or Leinart, the Raiders could have another disappointing season. I don’t think either of those options make them a playoff contender this year, so it’s up to Palmer to get the job done.

And just for the record; Matt Leinart is on the roster, but he’s no Oakland Raider.

Chargers/Raiders Point Spread

In their two meetings last season the Chargers and Raiders split 1-1. San Diego won the game in Oakland (38-26), but I think the Raiders will get their revenge this time. The Chargers come into the game with some offensive issues, and the offensive line needs to prove they can protect their quarterback. I’m expecting McFadden to have a big day, eating a lot of time off the clock and putting a couple of TD’s on the board. This game could come down to time of possession, and the Raiders will likely win this battle.

As mentioned above, the Chargers vs. Raiders point spread opened as a pick’em. At the time of this writing, the best Raiders point spread is -1 (-110) at BetOnline.com, and that’s my pick for this MNF matchup.

San Diego vs. Oakland Money Line

You’re better off betting the Raiders against the spread because it’s unlikely the game will end with the Raiders winning by 1. Since we’re picking the Raiders to win by more than 1, we’re betting the spread instead of the Raiders money line.

If you prefer the Chargers to win straight-up, there is more value betting the money line compared to the point spread. The best Chargers money line is +100 at BetOnline (bet $10 to win $10).

Chargers vs. Raiders Over/Under

The last time the Chargers & Raiders met in the Coliseum they combined for 64 points (38-26). Oakland will rush a lot on offense, but I expect the Chargers to air it out. Last year, the Chargers O/U record on the road was 6-2. The Raiders have gone over in 6 of their last seven games, and it’s hard to take the under in this one. It may be a bit messy, but I think they’ll get there.

I’m looking for a Raiders win in the range of 27-21 to 27-24. That puts us in the 48-51 range, so I’m taking the over of 46.5 (-110) at BetOnline.com. We can save a nickel going o47 (-105) at Bovada, but I prefer the extra 1/2 point in this one.

Cowher and Sharpe both like the Raiders in this one. On another note, how is Bill Cowher not coaching right now?
