Boston Celtics vs. New York Knicks – 2013 NBA Playoffs Round 1 (Game 2)

When: 8:00pm ET. Tuesday, April 23rd 2013
Where: Madison Square Garden in New York City

The Boston Celtics 0-1 (1-0 ATS) need a more inspired effort from their two veteran leaders if they expect to take this series back home with a 1-1 split. The New York Knicks 1-0 (0-1 ATS) need to have a much better effort from their starting line-up in game 2.

Latest Celtics vs. Knicks Game 2 Odds

The Knicks opened up as a -7 point favorite after game 1 and early action on Boston has knocked the point spread to -6.5 points and we could see more movement in the next two days. The over/under opened at 186 points and is now down a full pt already to 185 pts.

Will Carmelo Anthony Lead the Knicks to a Win in Game Two

Boston came out strong offensively in the 1st half of game 1 and they had a 53-49 lead at the break. The offense disappeared for both teams in the 2nd half and the Knicks outscored the Celtics 36-25 in the 2H to win game 1 of the series 85-78.

In Game 1 Carmelo Anthony had 36 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals to lead the Knicks to victory. Carmelo was on fire beyond the arc early in the game and he finished 4/6 (66.67%) from 3-point territory while shooting 13/29 (44.83%) from the field.

The Celtics leaders (Paul Pierce & Kevin Garnett) were relatively quiet in game 1. Pierce and Garnett combined for 29 points in G1 on 37.04% (10/27) shooting from the field and 12.5% (1/8) shooting from beyond the arc. They also had 9 turnovers combined.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Knicks starting line-up change after the way they played in game 1. If you take Carmelo out of the Knicks starting line-up in game 1 the four remaining starters shot 33.33% (6/18) from the field and had just 15 rebounds.

Kenyon Martin, J.R. Smith and Jason Kidd came off the bench for the Knicks and combined to shoot 40.63% (13/32) from the field while grabbing 19 rebounds and 6 steals. Boston’s bench combined for just 4 points (4 FT’s) in 51 minutes of playing time.

How the Boston Celtics Will Win Game Two

Boston has to improve on their shot selection. In game 1 of the series Boston shot 41.5% (27/65) from the field, 25% (5/20) from beyond the arc and 100% from the free throw line (19/19). The Celtics should drive the lane and look for fouls more often.

The Celtics also need to protect the basketball better in this game, as they had 20 turnovers in game 1. During the season Boston turned the ball over an average of 14.7 (17th) times per game and they need to turn the ball over less than that in game 2 to win.

Boston ranked #7 in defensive efficiency (1.000) this season and played well defensively in the opening game. One thing Boston needs to do in game 2 is smoother Anthony. In game 1 Anthony had too many open looks and that can’t happen on Tuesday.

How the New York Knicks Will Win Game Two

During the season the Knicks averaged 99.8 PPG (11th) and they were ranked #3 in offensive efficiency (1.073). In the four games against the Celtics in the regular season the Knicks were 3-1 SU and ATS because they averaged 98.25 PPG.

In order to take a 2-0 lead in the series the Knicks need more production from players other than Anthony. In the regular season Carmelo averaged 25.3 PPG and scored 25.75% of the Knicks points against Boston, but in G1 he scored 42.35% of his team’s pts.

The Celtics will be able to figure out how to shutdown Anthony as the series progresses and if the Knicks don’t get much better production from the rest of the team they’ll be in trouble. Tyson Chandler is a player that needs to step it up. Chandler averaged 10.4 PPG this season, but didn’t even take a shot in game 1.

Boston Celtics vs. New York Knicks Predictions

If you watched the 1st game the Celtics looked great in the 1H before falling apart in the 2H. Turnovers played a huge role in their opening game loss and if they can fix that issue while limiting the production of Anthony, I think they’ll win on Tuesday.

The Celtics money line is currently +253 at JustBet and while I think the Celtics have a great chance to even up the series on Tuesday I’d stick with the point spread. Boston still has a lot of questions that need answered before I’d take a shot on them on the ML.

Getting +6.5 points on the point spread seems generous. I expect Pierce to have a better shooting game and improve upon his 1/7 shooting from beyond the arc. The over/under doesn’t interest me although the trend this year has been the under (4-1) in games between these two teams.
